-One thing I check for is compressing leaking into the cooling system from a bad head gasket. After you drive it simply look inside the coolant reservoir for bubbles.
-Pull the oil fill cap to check for excessive blowby.
-suspension parts.
Many other things. DEM123, may I ask why your mechanic would need to be told what to look for? I understand a truck purchase is a lot of money and nobody wants a headache.
What year/type truck do you have in mind?

Go to Jeff Garmon in Griffin Ga. Just south of Atlanta. Real nice man. He can make men love machines. I 've been to his shop 5 times. When you see long black strips of rubber on the road you are at his shop.
I also vote for Jeff Garmon. He rebuilt my transmission and went out of his way giving me and the wife a tour of his shop. The wife was even impresssed and that's saying something.
