alan , i think its because i ran out of fuel twice #ad
, but i'm not sure , its easy enough to pull the pump ... for me anyways . and check , and the rebuild kit is only $20 , carter # 888-178 . its called a strainer ???? , i'll find out tomorrow what it is . for now i'm swapping the guts from the 7 psi i have here in my office .

as far as that pump from cummins , how much is it ? the carter 15 psi is $80 from summit or jegs and needs to be moved back closer to the tank , that is what is killing these pumps , on a QC SB and Reg Cab LB there is close to 8 feet of line between the pump and the floor of the tank , over 9 feet on a QC LB .

Thanks all for the response. Glad to see I'm not going blind.

Mopar, how did your strainer look when you pulled the factory lift pump? Did you take it out from underneath and did you remove the starter? That pump doesn't look like it would come out very easily from underneath. My neck was aching just from the few moments I was under the truck looking for the strainer.

From the TDR, Issue 29, p. 16 I quote the following:

Starting in 1994 the Cummins engine is equipped with a pre-strainer/fuel heater. It is located low on the left side of the engine in the fuel line before the fuel transfer pump. The strainer should be removed for inspection by unscrewing the bottom bowl of the unit.

I looked for the strainer last night and I could not find it. I assumed #ad
he is talking about the lift pump. I didn't see anything in the fuel line before the lift pump that looks like it could be removed for inspection. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks

John, When the 24V came out, I believe the strainer disappeared. You are correct about it being on the bottom of the lift pump..... but it was the mechanical lift pumps. I hate it because it was a nice "prefilter" for the big stuff.

I believe there is now a prefilter (big screen) on the pickup in the fuel tank. Mopar Muscle has some pics in here:

i don't have a pic of the strainer in the tank , but the carter HP pump i have here to add , which is physically the same as the factory lift pump , has a screen inside it that can be removed and cleaned , the stock lift pump came also be rebuilt , i ordered a kit and am going to do mine to see if the pressure comes back . i had 13psi when it was installed , its now 11psi .

when you pull the pump off the engine , the mounting bolts are double ended , remove them and the cover comes off , the strainer is in there .

Thanks, MoparMuscle. My understanding was that the strainer was no longer there. On the rebuilding part... ... I think I'm going to order the new Cummins lift pump. I understand that the new one is the real deal for holding pressure. Do you think you are losing pressure because of the pump or possibly because the strainer is getting clogged?

ok , i pulled the factory pump out saturday . the easiest way is to disconnect the lines from the fuel filter and remove the whole filter housing . you pre 2000 guys have it easier as the filter won't drain when you pull off the lines , but we can drain ours on the 2000 and newer , though it all doesn't come out , put some rags or a catch can under there to catch as much of the fuel as possible .

the filter is held on with 2 bolts , remove those bolts , unplug the wires and lift it out .

now you will be able to see the lift pump , the fuel line from the tank comes off very easy , squeeze the 2 blue tabs while pulling off the line . remove the 3 13mm nuts and the 10mm bolt holding on the banjo line and that bracket swings up.

lift out the pump , hold it securely in a vise and spin off the mounting studs , gently pry off the cover and the screen is there .

there is also a strainer on the the bottom of the inlet tube in the tank , you have to drop the tank to access this . good luck .

my screen was perfectly clean , your results may vary .

Mopar, The "new" Cummins lift pump is $126 from Cummins. A buddy from the SETDR has installed and tested one and says it is much better. Keeps good pressure numbers even at WOT.

Anyone have the part number for the new Cummins pump. It is much easier dealing with the local Cummins shop if you can give them a part number.

Thanks,

Dave D

When I changed mine I did it from underneath the truck. Yes I removed the starter and then the lift pump is right there. About a 2 1/2 hour job the first time.

Alan,

I wonder how the new lift pump from Cummins would be different than DC. Any chance DC redesigned the lift pump and made it worse.

Might be a good idea to buy the Cummins lift pump and carry the DC lift pump as a spare.

Thanks,
Charles

Mopar----I know the Carter pump has different fittings than the stock pump, will adaptor fittings work so the stock lines can be reconnected?

dusky , to a certian extent yes , but first off the line between the pump and the filter is so restrictive that it needs to be S-canned , i have an idea for those that desire to keep a stock look under hood while keeping the stock lift pump , but it may be a bit pricey . it involves buying 2 of the banjo fittings on the inlet to the stock lift pump , cutting it down to the lenght of the restrictive banjo and putting on a bubble flare on the end . this will keep stock look and give beter flow . there may be a glut of these fittings from the guys that are buying new lines ... HINT HINT

as far as replacing the stock pump with another carter HP pump , forget that , its NPT and there is no way , easily , to put the stock banjos back on , plus why ????

if you're going to swap in another pump , MOVE it back to where it should have been placed by the factory .
