I am rethinking my oil change strategies so I can coincide with the new "stringent" maintenance records/requirements on the 2003 Rams, and run synthetic lube with somewhat "extended" drain intervals. The long or "easy" oil change schedule is now 15,000 miles.

Previously I did 20,000 mile oil changes with Amsoil and Delvac 1. I want to drop back to 15,000 miles on synthetic, but don't want to waste the $$ lost on 5K shorter change intervals. That's where I'm hoping Prem Blue Extreme will come in.

What can you guys tell me about Premium Blue Extreme? It's designed for extended drain intervals. What base stock is it? And how much are you guys paying for it? If I could get it around $15/gallon or less, I will feel OK about 15,000 mile oil changes. But if it's not on the same level as Delvac & Amsoil, I'll take my losses on the more spendy stuff.

vaughn,

I have the PB extreme.

it is made for extended drins, Cummins recomends it and I heard the developer for it... From a valvoline developer... . when I was in Indiana for the nationals... . He said the new oil is the next group. Group H I think... . So I am using this oil now

I have only done 1 oil change so far. I have not gone 15K on my oil change but what I am doing, I change the filter at 5K and 10K and at the 10K I change the oil.

I do more stop and go urban areas so I just do that interval.

If you are more to hwy driving, then I guess 15K will do great.

Where did you get it?

Eric... Can you tell me where you got it , and about how much you paid for it. . I might want to try on my next oil change.

Is it 15w-40w???

Steve

Steve,

I got it at the Valvoline distributor. in the yellow pages... . ( don't know address) I can't remember how much but I believe it was around 15-16$ ... . Bought a case at the time... . gonna do a change soon so when I get it i will let you all know how much...

Thanks for the info everyone. I like the prices I am seeing. I have a few miles to think about what I want to do for sure. I only have 6700 miles now, I'll change to synthetic at 20K, go 10K on the first change, then 15K per change after that.

Vaughn, the last time I was at Cummins Northwest (Renton, WA) I asked about the new Premium Blue Extreme (5W-40 synthetic)... it was $17. and change per gallon. Or about the same price a "dealer" or "preferred customer" can purchase 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine (full synthetic) from Amsoil.

Guess which way I went? :D

no war... just the facts man!

Thanks guys, I think I'll try the Cummins Dealer route. .

Steve

P. S. John, after I drain my "black" oil I can put it in the "pay forward post" as I think it will match your truck better? :D :D :D

It is a Group III oil that carries the new CI-4 rating. It is not in the same class as Amsoil or Delvac, but at $14 and change a gallon I think it is a good alternative. JMHO

Good point John. I had a price of $21/gallon in my mind for the Delvac 1 I was buying and had forgotten the Amsoil HDD 15W40 was less than $16/gallon with the "Preferred Customer" rate. Based on your "reminder" and Cooker's response, returning to the Amsoil option is looking better by the minute :)

Ya know Steve...

I experimented with an oil that looked like that once...

Arco Graphite. Although I thought it worked pretty darn well, it was almost unanimously regarded as crap!

Anyway, I appreciate the gesture...

just hope I can return it someday! :-laf

Vaughn, I posted that mainly for others to consider, as I knew you like a 5W rated synthetic for winter use on your side of the state. With prices between the three oils being that close I'd just go with whatever you prefer. :D
