Competition DHRA Sled Pulling on TV!!

The Pavement Princess gets another job! :D

My buddy (who shall remain nameless, lol) had a clutch go out on him while towing a piece of farm equipment, and asked if I could help him out. So last night at midnight I did the following mods: put in a #10 plate, all the way back, blocked the boost line between the head and AFC, and "modified" my 40's wastegate (suggested by Jason Burton since I don't have a valet switch yet). Then I hooked up his truck trailer, and accompanied by his son in their stock 12v we made the 4 hour drive to where they were waiting in Yakima.

We got her loaded and headed out by 7am, having to pull one nasty grade (Yakima to Ellensburg) right off the bat. Weight was about 9000lbs. I was worried about temps with my lazercut dv's, 370's, etc, but to my surprise I was able to hold 60mph+ all the way up with temps never going above 1100 deg! Boost held best at just above 20lbs, and I ran it with OD off.

I was very light on the throttle, not using more than 1/4 of it. Of course, a couple of times I had to test it when an unloaded Ford was coming up to pass... :D Bumping out of l/u, adding some more throttle, my temps would approach 1200 when boost would shoot to 60lbs and temps would drop again (never used more than 1/2 throttle); I let her go into 4th then l/u staying in it, and we were 75mph and climbing. I didn't do that for long, but it was nice to see what it could do.

I was extremely pleased with the performance, given that it's set up exclusively to race (and is quite good at it, I might add). Trans performed perfectly, staying cool, operating temp totally normal, EGT's manageable (yes Piers, I actually watched the gauge, I have a witness!).

If I loved this truck any more, I'd have to marry it... :-laf

Sounds like you have it setup very well! Makes you feel good when things work better then you think they will. Besides... It gives you a backup job in case racing doesn't go well... :)

Paul

Ain't that the truth, Paul? I could work for a living if it involved driving a Cummins! :)

I forgot to mention that my mileage was good as well; I haven't figured it out exactly, but prob'ly not much below 14mpg (I'm ususally at 17).

Piers talking about me? I'm shocked! :p Besides, I already told him that it's not so much a matter of me not using the gauge (I mean, I know which one the pyro is... ), I just think that Holset needs to make more heat-resistant turbos... :-laf

HI Rhonda, good story. I totally know what you mean about Cummins. I dont work on them but I have watched and listened to hubby so much he just tells them to talk to me. I really think I could do some of the bombings.

Them cummins turn me on too, specially when they spool up the ole twins hooked to a sled right before you drop the clutch. THERE IS NOTHIN LIKE THAT!!! major love, I love my old 12 valve it has soul!!!

I don't watch guages either after what I have seen and experienced only watch them if you think there is a problem. Other wise let er wind. My hubby can fix anything!!! lol

Hey!! If you have time to watch the pyro, your truck is way to slow... . :D I have plenty of time to watch it, back at the pits during cool down... :-laf
