2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Power Steering Pump Failure?

I have a 2001 which I have installed the Banks Power Pack kit on. The truck has about 21,000 miles and is used for towing a trailer (about 10k lbs) and did allot of snow plowing this winter.

Other than change the oil and the fuel filter I have done no maintenance to the truck. What should I do to keep this truck in tip top shape ?

How often should I change the engine oil / transmission fluid / diff fluid.

Thanks for your help.

Every body has there own theory

It is up to you on times and mileages some follow the book to the T and some take what the book says and cut every thing in half it is up to you if you want to spend the money and over do everything or play it by ear. I personaly waited 60+k to change diffs and trans and transfer case. Changing the front diff was a waist it was clean but did it for kicks, I think I waited to long on the rear diff and transfer case both were very dirty and way over due for new fluid, trans was not bad but did it any way and have done it 20K later also for better shifting with different fluid. I hope to do the rear end at 60k intervals trans at 30k transfer case doesn't hold much oil keep an eye on that and do it about 20k. The other most important thing about perventative maintance is LOOK over the vehicle checking the brakes and looking for things loose or damaged most of the time you can catch stuff early if you keep on eye out for it.

This has worked well for me, all my vehicles have run over 200K miles with no problems...

Break-in :

Engine oil and filter - 5K miles

Transmission, front and rear diffs and transfer case - 10K miles

After that :

Engine oil and filter - 5K miles

Fuel filter - 10K miles

Front and rear diffs, transfer case, transmission - 30K miles

Brake fluid and coolant - every 2 years

ikold,

You may want to prepare your signature (the vitals for your truck that appear at the bottom of your posts) so folks can better answer questions. I think you go to 'User Control Panel' to do that.

I definitely agree you'll get a variety of responses. IMO, preventative maintenance depends alot on how you use your rig and power mods you've made. Our trucks are making similar power, but you use yours harder, so it's tough for me to prescribe a schedule for you. With that said, I'm changing ATF and transfer case around 30k, diff fluid (both) around 50k, and crank lube at 5k. Brake fluid and coolant every 2 years (will be adding power steering fluid to this schedule next time). Grease steering linkage every other oil change. Valve adjustments per owner's manual. Check brake pads every tire rotation (approx 6 to 8k). A/T band adjustment every other ATF change (60k). I follow all this unless I've got a big trip planned, then all bets are off and I go on a maintenance furry and restart all my schedules.

Now, as far as tip-top shape, and I don't mean to offend anyone, I would recommend researching your local area and finding a couple of reputable shops that can do the things you can't. That is, shops other than dealers. I'm lucky to have a top-notch alignment shop, diesel mechanic, Cummins shop, and A/T shop close by. So far, I've only gone to the alignment shop, but I know where the others are if I need 'em. You may have a great dealer, that's good you'll need one of those too, but for technical work I choose to place my trust (and coin) elsewhere. The good news is that as long as you have a watchful eye these trucks are durable and rather hard to hurt. Good luck.

Thanks

Thanks for your advise guys I appreciate your help. TDR is great, and its members are very helpfull!

Is that all I need to worry about ? Is there anything else I should be looking out for ?

Someone had mentioned greasing the steering linkage are there other points on the truck that should be greased regularly ?

Thanks again

Jon
