I am going to install the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold. How far into the manifold should the probe extend? I will be removing the turbo to install a 16 cm2 housing so I will be able to get an accurate depth.

LT: Before final installation of the pyro probe, I test fit (screwed in) the probe in the exhaust manifold without the turbo bolted up. (for visuals) Results: Too much restriction from a long probe in one chamber of the manifold. I screwed in a stainless pipe nipple into the manifold, with a stainless npt reducer coupling on the top of the nipple. The result was to raise the probe up to allow about 1/4 inch to project into the manifold chamber. Much less restriction.
Use hi temp teflon pipe sealant on the threads. Use the same npt thread size as the pyro probe.

Lt,a 1/4" - 1/2" is plenty. Isspro has a thermocoupler that is adjustable. Don't over tighten it and you can change the depth.

I think I just bought the same Isspro thermocouple and noticed how long the end was that would stick down in the mamifold. I too thought this can't be right, in fact I think it would bottom out on the bottom of the housing. So i sent Isspro an e-mail today to ask them what they recomend. I thought they might make a shorter probe(it really should be shorter). Got an answer today. They said there were several solutions to the problem, but that it was too involved to do by e-mail. They gave me an 800 # to call tomorrow . I'll let yall know what they suggest tomorrow.

Westach (the guys that make the twin gauge Geno's sells) states that the end of the probe should be in the center of the flow stream. Don't worry about restricting the exaust-dyno testing on race sleds (that's snowmobiles for you southerners) shows a 1-2 hp loss @ 100 hp and 2 stroke motors are much more finicky when you start sticking stuff into the pipe.

Lt, Just installed a prob today. All I do is insert my little finger (pinky) into the exhaust manifold and push the prob down until it pushes against my finger. Kind of like a feeler gauge. Making sure you have a drag on the finger while pulling it out. Not real technical I know, but I have done it this way for years and never had a problem. Also make sure not to over tighten the compression fitting as it will render it usless for pulling the prob out again without taking the whole fitting out. It will not take much, just so it does not slide up or down is all you need to accomplish. I always drill and tap two holes as long as I'm doing it. Just plug the other using plenty of high temp anti-sieze.
