Need Help, my old truck, 2000 dodge 24 valve wont run with a load, idles fine and revs fine ( in neutral) but soon as you load it, it dies? It has good fuel pressure, changed fuel filter, took off edge comp box, still dies! Could the injection pump be (VP44) bad? Any help?

Thanks again,

Snoxracer

Any codes? Any white smoke? Is there a Cummins Service shop nearby. When the injection pump was dying on my 3500, I took it to Cummins for diagnosis... they confirmed it was for $89. Your's could be dying.

Hey guys thanks for the replys!!! Sorry that I was so short on information in the original post, I was just trying to get a post on in a hurry and I hadn't looked at the truck myself yet, so the information I had was from the guy driving the truck. Anyway I just got done looking at the truck and here is the info: the truck starts fine, idles fine, revs fine with no load, and then when you start to take off it has no power at all. Put it to the floor and it will slowly, I repeat slowly accelerate. There is no smoke, white or black, I have unplugged the Edge Comp box and no change. Even with the box plugged in on level 5-5( it will usually smoke really black) there is no smoke.

But here is what I found, when I shut off the truck and turn the key to the on position, I stepped on the accel pedal many times and then started the truck. And the truck then ran normal, full power, put the box on all levels and everything worked fine. And still is as of right now, but what is going on? I thought that a long time ago there was mention of a problem with the accelerator??? Anyway that is all I have for now thanks again for all of your help!

Thanks

if stomping the go pedal fixes it then I would suggest trying a different APPS on it first and then maybe the MAP. I have a spare APPS you can try but not the MAP.

Well I ran it to a guy that has worked on a few diesel trucks and we hooked it up to his scanner. It actually was showing a code when I took the truck in for a low boost code. Causing it not to fuel tell it sees boost, but when it was in limp mode it was still showing 10psi of boost on my guage. So I would think that would be enough boost to start fueling? The mechanic thought that the waste gate is stuck open, but why would it go in and out of limp mode? I personally think that it is either in the MAP sensor or in the Edge box itself. Tonight I will check out the waste gate and see whats up, it is a Piers HX40 that I put on a couple years ago. Anyway thanks again!!!

If you have an Edge box plugged into you MAP, then that is the issue most likely. I would unplug the box, plug the MAP back into it's stock configuration and go for a ride. Did that fix it? If so, the box is bad. If not, the MAP is most likely bad. I had a bad Edge box do exactly the same thing. After all, it is supposed to limit the max boost the computer sees.

One word of warning. My dad pulled his bone stock '02 over to Montana and was telling me about low power. Checked the codes, only thing that came up was a bad MAP. Dealer was able to change it out and then we ran the dealer scanner on it. Got a 0216 code. VP got replaced next day.

So, sometimes the codes point you in the right driection, but ultimately, may be a different root cause than previously suspected.
