problem with drop down menues in IE-10

Was setting up a new Windows 8 computer and found that the drop down menues do not work when using IE-10.

I suspect it's just another "protective" measure included in IE-10 - probably intended to prevent spamming drop-down items from devious websites - but hampers the wanted ones as well. Wonder if you have drop-down and pop-up windows prevention activated either in your virus protection or firewall software?
