I have never really had a problem my truck other then two lift pumps until now. I do not really use my tailgate that often in the 4 years I have had my truck, but since I had to haul something today. When I tried to shut the tailgate (no matter how hard I slam it shut) the tailgate latches would not latch onto the pins and the tailgate would fall down. I do not know if it is just mearly lubrication or what. Does anybody know what else could be wrong? Sorry for the stupid question.

Thanks,

Rusty hardware

Take a look at the latch where it is attached to the tailgate, there is a tab in a slot. the slot is about 1/8" wide by about an inch long and runs parallel to the end of the tailgate. The tab in the slot looks like it might pivot around the rotating pin of the latch. On my '98 when the latches don't catch, I just have to push the tab forward, toward the tailgate hinge or the bed of the truck. This pulls the rusty binding linkage between the latch and the handle. into the correct position so the latch can catch.

Lift up your handle and you will see two arms pivoting on a center pin. the arms on my truck were binding from some rust and lack of lubrication. Several shots of penetrating oil solved most of the problems.

I wish I was near my truck to take and attach a photo or two here, but I'm a long way from home right now. Maybe someone else can take a pic or two.

Hope this helps, Greg L

I know the obvious can be easily overlooked sooooo, could it be ab ice problem? Has happened to me several times during winter months. So, grab mom's hair dryer and go warn up around the latch. Quick, easy, cheap.

Just a thought!

I had problems with mine, didn't matter if it was warm or cold or whatever it just seemed like the latches stayed stuck in the open position. I tried spraying lubrican in it to get it to work and it would seem better for a few days and then back to sticking. Turned out it was on the backside of the handle I had to take out the actual handle in the middle of the tailgate and clean and lubricate that and since then everything has been working fine.

I had the same problem when mine was new and only in really cold weather. I adjusted the pins on the bed out about a 1/16 on both sides and I have never had the problem again.

Well it is either the cold or the latch is starting to get out of adjustment. When I left work the temp was slightly above freezing and the tailgate shut, but I had to shut it twice to get it to latch so I guess I may see if I can adjust the latch to get it to work better. At least it latches now. Thanks.
