Problems out of gate.

Buddy of mine purchased new 04. 5 CTD. Drove for 150 miles and parked in driveway. Next morning found red fluid under truck. Parked in different spot, to ensure it wasn't previous stain, and sure enough it was new truck leaking. He took it to his dealer and after a whole day said that there was no leak that it may have been blow-by. He headed down and talked to the headcheese, who said no leak was found. He went to the truck bent down (not kneeled) wiped on the under side of frame and came up with a finger full of red oil. Big cheese said "oh" I guess we will keep it over night. My question is: Is there such thing as blow-by? And has anyone else had this problem?

No it is not blowby oil, it's transmission fluid (if it's an Auto) or the transfer case. Engine oil is not red.



There is blowby on all Cummins engines, more so on brand new as well as "tired out" engines, but never enough to make a puddle, especially when parked.

It could also be power steering fluid. There have been several posts about this. I was one, my pump was replaced becaused of stripped threads on the bottom of the pump.

Sounds more like blow hard than blow by to me. :-laf

Thanks guys, it was my truck that DHalbrooks was talking about. It ended up being brake fluid. The Brake booster was shot and had to be replaced. Needless to say, if I had just taken the dealers word and believed it was blow-by, I could have ended up with no brakes and possibly a wrecked truck and family. What have I learned from this? Always ask TDR! Thanks again.
