i have this wierd wooshing/ticking noise when i get into it in 5th and 6th gear under load. dealer thought it was a split fuel line but when i got it back it's still making the noise. those of you with Industrial Injection turbos ever have a problem like this? what are things to check for without removing turbo? the problem is i can only hear it while under load so it's tuff to diagnose. maybe i'll get it on the dyno and see if i can locate the noise!... ... . james

turbo surge

I suspect you are experiencing turbo surge... . If you are running a large charger and towing heavy, the surge is greater. Does it happen at around 1700 rpm or so accelaerating? If so it probably is turbo surge. If it happens between shifts (sudden release of go pedal) it is probably turbo bark.

i've had this turbo for about 20,000miles. it's a new noise. i'm going to get it on a dyno and listen under the hood to try and isolate the noise. it gets real loud over 20psi of boost. i dont even know if it's the turbo making the noise.

Are you sure it's gear related and not PSI related? 'Whooshing' noises tend to be caused by intake manifold gasket or any number of clamps/seals in the intake piping.

Check the 4 bolts holding that turbo to the exhaust manifold. Since it sounds like it's around the turbo you may actually have an exhaust leak.

If the bolts nearest the engine are loose you can't see much (happened to me). There won't be any real discoloration until you put quite a few miles on it with a leak -- especially since that area tends to be blackish anyways.

I actually had mine fall off (lotta twisting/flexing exhaust<->turbo<->engine with a sled pulling truck) and didn't know it except when I felt under there to see if the bolts/nuts were still on. On the puller I've had 4 nuts back off; 2 nuts totally fall off; and one bolt sheer. Now I check them after every pull and I've put them on with blue loc-tite. For a normal driver it'd be good to check them at each oil change (along with all clamps).

For the intake manifold gasket -- note there are actually 3 gaskets to check. 1) top of grid heater; 2) bottom of grid heater; 3) under the intake manifold plate (long flat plate under the fuel lines that covers the intake).

Funny, mine don't ever come loose!:)
