Prodigy Brake Controller

2004. 5 325/600 3500 LWB SRW 4 X 4 is arriving in about one week. Anyone have any feedback on the Tekonsha Prodigy? Installation hints? How is it performing? I have a 2001 34' Montana 5th wheel.

Amazon.com had these things for almost half of what you'd pay in an RV shop. Think it was around $85. 00. You should be able to find it pretty easy. Be at your house in a few days.



Also, it comes with a wire harness that you splice to the pig-tail that came with your truck. But I'd get a pre-made one that Tekonsha also makes. When I got my unit at an RV store I went ahead and purchased the Tekonsha made wire harness also. It's sold separately and should be on the store shelf near the controller. It's cheap, done well, heavy duty wires, has a braided mesh around the wires that looks real nice, and plugs right into your truck socket with no splicing.



Lastly, Tekonsha updated this unit about a year ago with 2. 4 software (something like that). There's still some old units out there. Just look on the bottom of the box and make sure it's got the 2. 4 sticker on it. Or the online store will indicate this also. The update was only to deal was some crudy Ford problem. But I always like to get the updated equipment.



The unit is very good. Some here may speak of the Jordan controller also. But I can't imagine anything better then this Prodigy. Felt like my truck wasn't even hooked to the trailer anymore. Like driving a car. The unit is highly intelligent.

And the quick disconnect lets me put the unit in the house when I'm not using it for months at a time. I don't think you can do that with the Jordan very easily. But someone can correct me about that.

When you get it adjusted properly write down the settings and stow in the truck somewhere.

Brake controllers have been widely discussed on this forum. You might want to do a search and you'll get all kinds of good info. Consensus seems to be that either the Prodigy of Jordan are the best. They work quite differently. I have the Prodigy and am very happy with it. However, not sure that it's better than the Jordan. Also, I think there is a new one out that may be even better. I bought mine through Camping World. At the time, they were on sale for under $100. Haven't seen them that low since.

Excellent brake controller and its very easy to install. Seems like I remember reading on here not long ago that a website had it on sale for like $80. It may have been a link to amazon.com like Lazy-boy said. Any hoo, I am pleased with mine.

I ordered mine on Monday from www.rjays.com in MO. They shipped 2-day air UPS included in the price. I also got the harness. All told it was $115.



Even though it will be tomorrow before I install the unit I can say that it appears to be very well made. Not at all like the cheap controller I have used in the past. (Hayes Lemmertz brand)



Also the rjays site said all they have are the "updated" units. I am very happy with their service.

Very happy with mine. Much smoother operation (application and release of trailer brakes) than solid state units I've used.

I got mine at a local RV shop, missed the Amazon price. I needed it to install the next day. I don't haul anything like your RV, but it works great for the loaded hay wagon in my readers rigs pictures. There is also a picture of where I removed the ashtray and installed it in that opening. I didn't get the harness and just wired it to the one supplied by Dodge. I can't feel the trailer back there on stops. It works great.
