I have a need to move some heavy construction equipment trailers but don't want to spend much cash on the idea.

What is the safe limit for bumper pulls?
Is there any product which can take some of the vertical weight off the hitch?

I know the truck has the pulling power but I don't want to rip my OEM hitch off when I connect the trailer.

This is about rental bucker loaders, etc.

If I am nuts, just say so. thx

I hate to rent a truck to pull the trailer if my Ram is capable of doing it.

If it is a factory hitch you could have a 10,000# trailer with 1,000# tongue weight if you had the weight distribution set to match. The Reese Titan has a capacity up to 14,000# depending on application and you still need the weight distribution setup. It would be your call if you want to exceed these stated limits. Personally I wouldn't worry about the engine or the hitch - just everything between the 2, including the frame.

How much weight we talkin' here? A buddy of mine has on occasion loaded his 4000lb GVW 4-place snowmobile trailer to over 10k and then pulled it with, get this, his 1/2 ton V-8 ram gasjob auto trans. It looked like it was ready to take off like an airplane it sagged so much, but it did it repeatedly and logged well over a hundred thousand miles before he sold it.

Now see what you did David!! Here I thought I was doing fine pulling 12 to 14 thousand on a tag-a-long trailer and you ruined all my fun telling me that my bumper can't do it #ad

Hey Arctic cat, I think your buddy's secret is not knowing any better. It's kinda like people who take off for parts unknown in their minivan with 200,000 miles on it, 4 bald tires, and the original belts and hoses #ad
... and make it! Now, if I tried something like that, I wouldn't make it across the street.
