I have a Bully Dog Triple Dog downloader on my stock 04. What kind of problems could this downloader cause? I've heard plenty of horror stories about melted pistons and bad injectors. I dont want to destroy this engine.

Put some gauges on it so you can monitor the situation. Consider a Smarty that lowers EGT's

I had one towed in with a fried #6 going over the grapevine with no gauges and a 5er. (under 5k miles)There is a level of risk, gauges should be required with that type of set-up.

I actually towed with it in tow economy awhile back. The truck, trailer and cargo was probably around 20000-21000# and seen no change in the coolant temp and truck has been running fine. Could the EGTs get out of hand running it on performance or extreme with no load on the truck?

Old rule from this site as well as others. GAUGES FIRST! That advise seemed to have been followed pretty close in years back. Seems after third Gen. trucks have been out lots of folks think that advise must of been hogwash cause I've read MANY posts from folks that have said I'll get gauges soon but have a box or down loader on it now. Coolant temp with the factory gauge not going to tell you squat about Egt. Yes a fueling enhancers is a risk.

if you drive lightly you should be fine. is it a good idea, no. every truck ive had has had gauges. even with my bully dog on extream on my dmax the only way to hit 1200* is a long wide open run (which i never get to do). even then i am only that hot for a second or 2 before i have to slow down. towing, get gauges, no excuses here. im only talking about temp dangers. i dont know about the others. its always a gamble. i lost a p-pump with a gsk without warning after 2 years of perfect performance. my uncle told me (big rig mech) a particular engines life span is based more on gallons burned than miles. double your hp and your cutting life expectancy. being the great engine these are, that means you'll have to to settle for 300k instead of 600k which is fine considering the rest of the truck will wear out first. id worry more about your trans/clutch.

My trailer is only 4500 pounds and when I tow it the back of my truck is FULL of gear.
I tow on Performance all the time and have not had it get more than 1250º and that was only briefly lugging up a hill, shifting down to 5th it dropped.
You should not run a programmer without gauges though.
