Here's the empty tank, the sending unit had to be removed to have clearance to swing the new OPD valve.

And while I have it apart I'm going to have the tanks blasted and repainted.

I took a rubber mallet to the guard and adjusted it so the valve would swing but just barely (look for the black marks on the guard). Now its off to get them repainted, then recertified and finally filled, should be good to go for the next 5 years.

1 more, Thanks Gitch for helping me post the pics ( now where did I put those pics of the wife... . LOL

Hope this help somebody as its been a pain in my a$$

Tank valves

Quiet a project, glad you found a satisfactory solution. What did you use to screw the valves in and out? bg

Well I beat them out by sticking a 1/2" extension into the old valve to break it lose then used pipe wrenches.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for a more technical answer like "I have this special tool to remove the valves from propane tanks that makes the job a snap and I will lend it to you for the weekend. " I have four tanks that I want to upgrade and have bought the new type valves, the tanks are not empty yet. Some years ago I tried to remove the valve from a small tank to make an air tank, I ended up wrecking the whole tank. bg

I got mine from a LP dealer around the corner from me, they said it coudn't be done, I asked, if I came back those valves installed would you certify them and fillem up.

They said it still couldn't be done but if I came back with the valves installed and they didn't leak then yes.

So I bought the valves :)
