New Clutch

Question about FP gauge.

Whats everyones opinion on Propane Injection? Is this hard on the engine? Even though it is clean running what effects does it have? Are EGTS more of a problem? What kind of power gains do you get from these? Would really like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly on these setups.

Propane is hard on headgaskets! It will also raise egt's while it is running. Most of the systems I have seen advertise 40-80 HP gains, but with the one I used to run I only got about 20-30 HP and this was with some bombing of the propane system.

Personally if I were you and wanted additional HP I would consider a set of DD2 injectors.

I thought that propanes big claim to fame besides some HP was that if used in economy mode, you would get enough additional mpg to more than pay for itself. My understanding is that a very small amount causes a more complete burn of the diesel. Can anybody out there shed any light on this. :(

Nowel is right on this one I think propane does have it's place. I have been running it for about 60k or 3 years with no problems as of yet. When my truck was at 300hp on diesel only I used to leave it armed all the time and it would come on at 8lbs of boost and make about 80 hp. Now at 425hp on diesel only I leave it on all the time except when towing because it will now detonate, I also have it turned down to 40 or so Hp. It spools the turbo much quicker and does cut down the smoke a fair bit. I didn't notice any savings at all in total fuel cost if you combine fuel and propane and the EGT was about the same on or off.

Don't let the wife find out. . LOL

Yep, the wife would flip right now if she knew what I have in store. Gonna have to get after my Sales Reps. to kick some butt so the bonuses will pay for my new found addiction. :D transmission comes next cuz I dont know how longer I'll be able to be good with the FMS and not add to much fuel. Certainly mixed opinions about Propane, pretty sure not the route for me now. My stock little turbo needs to go pretty quick after the transmission. Ah... . horsepower is such a dangerous thing.

I installed a two stage propane system about 3 months ago. This particular system is a bleed system only. 5. 5 gallon will last me about 1100 miles. I am seeing about a 1. 5 to 2 mile per gallon increase. By using a bleed system, it is enough propane to act as a catalyst that helps supplement the oxygen in the cylinder. As far as power, maybe 5 to 10 horse. There is a slight gain but not much. This particular system is pretty neat in how it operates. The supply tank can be either liquid or vapor. If using liquid the unit will vaporize it and send it on. I elected to use a vapor tank because in order to get the size tank that I wanted. All that was available was vapor. The unit's electrical system is set up with some good safeguards. There are 2 power feeds. The main feed is ignition (key on). The second is a field wire that I connected to the alternator. It will only energize when the truck is running (alternator producing 12 volt current. ) This prevents any kind of build-up of propane in the air intake system.

Earlier in the post I mention it is a two stage system. The first stage adds a very small, and I mean small, amount during idle. The second stage kicks in when the throttle is moved via a limit switch on the throttle cable. The whole system will shut down when the supply tank gets down to 20 lbs. pressure. Believe it or not the whole system fits in a box that is only 1"x3"x5". I hid mine under the stock air box. The only thing that you can see is a supply line.

I,ve been thinking about getting a system like that. With just my EZ and stock injectors, I smoke a lot more than I'd like to. I want to upgrade to DDIIs, but I know the smoke would pi$$ me off. Who makes the system you're running?

Propane injection was a hot topic here a few years ago until many reports of blown engines. Don't hear much about it anymore for good reason. Imagine if you post a wanted ad in the classified section here you could come up with several propane systems that have been removed for cheap.

jrandol, you need to pace yourself. Maybe you should get some help. I'm sure there is a 12 step program available for the TDR BOMBing members:D :D

You have gone from bone stock to this in less than a three weeks.
