The proper care and feeding of a K&N Air Filter.

1. Prior to cleaning your K&N it may be a good idea to purchase a second filter to swap out with your dirty one since your truck will be without one for at least a day.

2. Purchase a Recharge Kit from your local Auto Parts store. K&N recommends that you only use their “cleaner”. I have used Castrol Super Clean diluted to a 50/50 solution with great results.

3. Remove the dirty K&N Air Filter from the vehicle.

4. Try and knock any large dirt chunks or bugs out of the filter by lightly tapping it on clean workbench or countertop.

5. Put the drain plug in the sink drain.

6. Place the filter in the sink.

7. Completely soak down the filter with the cleaning solution from both sides. This may take ¼ of the bottle.

8. Fill the sink with hot water to a level that covers the filter.

9. Soak the filter for 15 minutes.

10. Slosh the filter in the hot water, and drain the sink.

11. Rinse the filter from the clean to the dirty side with hot water.

12. Repeat steps 4-10 until the left over water in the sink is free of oil and dirt and you feel that you could drink any water that flows through the filter, The filter has a light gray appearance.

13. Using tweezers remove any bug remains from the pleating.

14. Set the filter aside and let it dry completely. (6 hours minimum)

15. Using the aerosol can from the Recharge Kit lightly spray the filter with oil. Do not over oil the filter as it only needs enough to cover the pleats and change their color. Set the filter aside for 30 minutes to let the oil soak into the Cotton Gauze.

16. Closely examine the filter and re-oil any areas that did not get oiled.

17. Apply a thin layer of grease to the sealing surfaces of the filter to ensure no dirt travels around the filter.

18. Those of you that are using foam pre-filters DO NOT use K&N filter oil on the foam. This oil is not the correct type to use on a foam element and will wick into the cotton gauze.

19. Clean the Foam pre-filter the same way as the filter element. This is where the Castrol Super Clean comes in handy. FYI, if you have any cuts on your hands that you do not know about…. . the Castrol Super Clean will let you know about them.

20. Re-oil the foam pre filter by soaking it in a foam filter oil like Maxima, Bel Ray, etc… These can be found at any motorcycle shop.

21. Squeeze out the excess oil from the pre-filter and set aside for 30 minutes.

22. Massage the foam pre-filter to evenly distribute the oil. NOTE These oils are very thick and sticky when the vehicle evaporates.

23. Re-install the pre-filter on the K&N element.

24. Re-install the filter in the vehicle and go for a drive.

Cliff... .

I assume you are referring to the 25-0880 "foam"(I think it's more like woven plastic, not foam) pre-filter that fits over the RE-0880??

If so, where did you learn about not using K&N oil for this filter, and the motorcycle store Maxima, brand, etc. ? I recall that the box instructions on the 25'r said it must be oiled before install, but did not reference any specific oil, so I used the K&N, but very judiciously.

Regardless, very helpful "how to"... .

I have not seen the "woven plastic". I have seen a coarse foam pre-filter on a few trucks equiped with the RE-0880 though.

I assume this is in regards to the "foam" elememt.

I have been riding dirt bikes for the last 16 years and I learned the hard way (I was 14 at the time this happened) about the proper oil to use on a foam filter element. Let me just say that I wasted the top end on my old Kawasaki KE100, and I had to pay for and rebuild the engine myself.
