Proper Oil Filter '04 HO

I looked at the FAQs & see that Dave has said the oil filter for the 3rd gen is different than previous models because it accepts a socket wrench to aid removal. Are there any other differences? Geno's catalog says the late filter can be used on any CTD. Is the converse true? Can the older style filter be used on the new motors?



Steve White motors is selling Mopar #5016547AC on ebay for $86. 99 for a case of 12. That' a pretty smokin' price if you can use 12. I'm thinking of splitting a case with a bud. IF they will work properly. I'm not concerned about the flutes on the cannister (or lack of them). I've never met an oil filter I couldn't get off!

I get my filters from my local trucker repair shop. I would recommend Fleetguard. They make the filters for cummins and Chrysler OEM for cummins. I can get the standard #LF3972 for around $6 without having to pay for 12 at a time. No shipping either. The upgraded Fleetguard filters are #LF16035 "Stratapore" (better filtering media) or the #LF3894 Stratapore w/o fluted bottom. You pay a little more for the fluted end so I don't buy it. Make sure you are comparing apples w/ apples. There is a big difference between stratapore and standard cellulose media. Its worth the added $ to protect your engine from the real fine micron dirt. That is supposed to be the most damaging to your engine.

I'm hoping someone can tell me if the Mopar number I posted is the good filter or not. I know Fleetguard makes the Mopar filter. I also DON'T have a local trucker repair shop. The ONLY sources we have down here in the Keys are NAPA, Discount Auto Parts or the dealer in Key West. The NAPA filter is either a repackaged Fleetguard or Wix depending on who they bought from the last time. Discount only stocks the Fram for the CTD. NOT gonna use one of those. The nearest trucker repair shop, Cummins dealer, or any good reasonably priced source is 130 miles away in Miami. I'm not driving 130 miles each way into a city that I just HATE to drive in just to buy a couple of oil filters.



I've read all about the Fleetguards, know about Geno's mail order availability. Know that the best place to buy this sort of thing is the Cummins shops or a big truck repair facility. Not one anywhere close. I'm looking to get a good deal on a quantity buy if these are the good stratopore filters. Can anyone decode this Mopar number for me?

5083285AA is the Mopar that came on my '04. Mopar filters are standard cellulose. Geno's gives a better price, even one at a time, than what you found on eBay. Getting them direct from Fleetguard avoids the Mopar markup.

Same thing I ordered in for my '03 today. $15. 20 list / $11. 38 cost. I was told by my dealer that the old style (non-fluted) filters would work, but I was also told they're dd'ing the old style and only carrying the fluted ones. My next filters will be the Stratapores. The home-made filter wrench I use makes no difference if the filter is fluted or not.

I use the older style Stratapore and remove it from above after taking off the turbo intake hose. Makes filter R&R a snap.

i too am picking up my truck on 12/8! the weird thing is it's the same truck you ordered to the tee! hopefully dodge wont mess up delivery. i know it will be alot for them to handle delivering the same two trucks on the same day 1400 miles away from each other. i'll see ya in february. we rent a house in cugo key for a month. maybe we can get together and do the CRAWL! nice choice in truck's... . james
