Proper towing 2003 5.9 2500 stock tk.

I have a 2003 Ram 2500 Quad cab tk. 3.73 rear end Automatic trans. I bought it new in 2003. 98000 mi. I have towed with it most of its miles.
It is an automatic transmission. I have always let the transmission think for itself,
Should I be towing a 8000lb. trailer in OD.?

I can't speak for your truck or automatic transmission, but I tow my 12,000 trailer in both 5 and 6th gear on my truck. With the 68RFE auto the 5th gear is a single overdrive and the 6th gear is double overdrive. When in the mountains and towing I watch my tach, EGT's, Boost pressure, engine RPM's and transmission temps. Down shifting to 5th gear out of 6th gear if needed to maintain the speed limit.

Not going to hurt a thing to tow that weight and let it find its gear. OD is more than capable for a mere 8k

You'll probably slip your TC before damaging the od unit if you have a stock setup.
