This forum is excellent, I found it last nite and i joined last nite  I was sure glad to find this place:)

About a month ago I bought a 93 W250 reg. cab 4X4 fully loaded (i think, i may be missing an option or two not sure lol) with 175,000 km (109,000 miles) off my Uncle for $9000 Cad. I always wanted a Cummins and I am babying this thing to death lol, except I'm making her work, I'm pulling around a 14,000 lb manlift around the city... . I thought it would have a little more power than it does at the higher speeds (4th-5th gear seems hard on her) but im ok with it; but i'd like to have more power if i wouldnt torch tha transmission(I think its a getrag?? Everything in the truck is still stock i believe). Is tha stock standard trans decent? Reading through these forums makes me wanna spend money;)although i dont no on what (besides gages) - i'm a big fat newb to this whole thing-FOR NOW lol, cash is a little tight rite now anyways but i just quit smoking so that should help haha... I spent an hour and a half at tha car wash with her tonite, i think im in love :) Seems to be a great bunch here and I already no i spent a wise 48 dollars :)

Cheers,

Carl

Welcome to the TDR I can't help ya much with 1st gen questions but there are a lot of die hard 1st gen'ers that I am sure will help you. There is plenty that can be done to make your truck work/play better. Good Luck and enjoy the ride

The getrag isn't the prefered trans for our trucks. A lot of people have changed out to the NV4500 5 spd trans whenever they had problems with the getrag.

The biggest problems with the getrag was bearings going out from improper oiling. Most people overfill the trans with one guart of oil to help the oiling problem the trans does have.

If yours is not making noise I would just overfill it and drive it. The trans also doesn't like to be lugged. Keep the RPM up.

Welcome to the TDR

i agree with Philip. over fill the getrag and when you get money replace it (it will die soon)

and the gages are always welcome by the truck :D

Welcome...home ; )

Welcome to the club Carl! It seems like you have already been to the search forums. I'll tell you, not question is a dumb one, I know I've asked a few. Too much fun around here. Have a good time. Get some pictures up of you rig:D The congregation will be beating a path to your cyber door, I can smell the diesel, and here the rattling, look out...

Hi Carl and Welcome to the gang.

Sounds like you picked a good year and found one in good shape.

I am also kind of a new kid on the Block but have had my truck for 8 years and done lots of things to it.

There is no shortage of advice here and opinions vary.

I would start by replacing the fluids throughout the whole truck from one end to the other. With that age it is just a good idea. Take a good hard look at everything and it will indicate what kind of shape she is really in.

I would replace all the lubricants with a synthetic product of your choice. Many are good. I prefer Amsoil. Be sure and overfill your transmission.

Use the search forum button on the above tool bar to find volumes on most of the common concerns.

I don't know how much money you want to spend but it is best to keep the horse in front of the cart. By that I mean you are on the right track on installing gages to monitor things. RPM, exhaust temp (Pyrometer), and boost are probably the most common. and there are several companies that make a dash mount set up.

Establish a base line from there. Find out what is normal and right it down for future records. Make note of all your change's so you can keep track.

The next thing I would do is get a good air cleaner and maybe a larger free flowing exhaust. After that you can start looking at increasing your fuel and maybe playing with your Turbo. The sticky's already cover much of that.

Lastly, keep in mind that many people come here with problems that they want to get solved. If you read all the negative experiences you won't want to leave your driveway. These are good trucks and designed well. They will last a long long time if driven correctly and taken care of. Some folks have had real good luck with the stock transmission. Hopefully if you overfill it you will be to.

Looking forward to hearing more about your new adventures

Greg

Thanx for the warm welcome ppl :) If anyone knows where to get the accessories and parts (guages will be the first purchase) at good prices and that please drop me a line! Being from Canada maybe a Canadian distributor would be a better deal ? Anyways thanks and im sure this place will be a long pleasant ride :)

Thanx very much for the help fellas, just spent the last hour and a half lookin at Geno's :) Time flies... . One thing i cant seem to find thou is a tachometer  As for the gages i like the autometer ultra lite and i might even go digital with spa... the triple BD X looks interesting too, but they dont give a good pic of it. Are all guages created equal? Just kinda wondering if there's sum kinds of guages a guy should stay away from or if there all good ... .

Welcome to the site!:)

Don't be afraid to ask a question, there is always someone willing to help. Use the search feature as most of the questions you will ask are alredy discussed and if you can't find it there then its time for the questions.

You will learn a great deal here as we all have. As far as I'm concerned, we have the best group here of all the forums.
