Trying to swap out the PS Fluid using the "Turkey Baster" method... . I've emptied the resovoir 5 times using the baster approx. removing 10-12 ozs each time.

After re-filling with Valvoline SynPower PS Fluid I drive the truck vigorously in circles trying to mix the old with the new. It seems to be doing just that but the fluid doesn't appear to be getting any lighter in color. It looks like engine oil, dirty engine oil! The SynPower is clear when installed.

Does anyone know approx. how many swaps using the "Turkey Baster" method it could take to achieve CLEANER fluid that I'm seeing so far?

I'm sure someone has gone through this. Truck has 140k on the dial & I'm thinking the PS Fluid has never been touched before this.

That has to be irritating. I faced the same thing trying to switch to synpower.



I didn't do this yet, but i will probably end up disconnecting a hydraulic line and running the engine until the line sputters. Then reconnect it and refill.



I dunno how much the PS holds, but it's enough that you can't do a decent job with a turkey baster.



I got a decent amount out using a thin tube (1/4") and feeding it way down into the PS, then setting up a siphon and just let it sit and drain.



I got about 2 qts out this way.

I read your earlier posts on this subject. I'm thinking about doing just that. With the baster method I'm thinking you'de probably have to do this 20-30 to accomplish what can be done by removing the line.

See TDR #40, pp. 26-27. I list what percent of fluid can be replaced per time changed by the turkey baster. 5x = 87% and 7x = 94% for example.
 
On my 1st Gen I used this method at 145k miles, and it took about 3 quarts of new before I started seeing clearer fluid. I used cheap PS fluid for the first 2 quarts, then switched to Valvoline Synpower for the last 2 quarts. It did make a big difference in reducing PS noise and effort in the wintertime.
 
I did the same thing on my Jeep and CTD. It never came clear but did make a difference. The fluid went from a mud substance to something resembling wine.
 
Update! I've used the "Turkey Baster" method 9 times now & like WCJP stated mine has gone from a mud color to a wine color aswell, & the growl is gone aswell! I think I will continue however to run more new fluid in the system using the same method in hopes of getting it yet cleaner.

Kind of a slow process but simple enough to do.

that turkey baster method sucks i had some problems fitting my arm in there also. i did however use the siphon pump primer thing used to transfer kero. got way more out with very little effort and on mess. only one emptying and no freeze up last winter. this morning 30 degreese and the groan was back. the dam resivoir was low. where did it go? i dont see any leaks.
