I recently repowered a Suburban with a 1st gen 12v. When I went to fill up the power steering fluid it all wound up in the crankcase. Can anyone led me towrds what might be the problem. I did take it off the motor so I could clean and paint the motorand thought i put it back on the same as it came off. Not sure what I missed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If the engine in question is a 93 model, it should have a rotary vacuum pump in front of the power steering pump. If this vacuum pump is still attached to the block the oil in the power steering can not reach the crank case. Is the steering pump bolted direct to the block without the vacuum pump?

Nick

It is bolted to the front timing case and it also has the power assist for the brakes, Im assuming this is a vacuum pump. There is a small steel braided line that goes to the block. All the other lines go to the ps steering or the brakes.

My PS oil is leaking out of the pump and have no idea where it goes. The entire side of the engine and ps pump is dry. I keep filling her up though... ... ... ... .

The engine is a 1990 with the vacuum canisters.

I'd have to think on the later version as I don't think ps oil could find its way back through the vacuum pump to the engine.

I figured it out. I hooked the lines up wrong and didnt realize it. I hooked up the line that goes to the ps pump onto the vacuum pump which is oil fed from the engine. DUH! That explains the ps fluid finding its way to the crankcase. Thanks for all the responses. It helps to have an info/knowledge tank to tap into.

just remember also, i can pop my hood and give you detailed feedback, Hey i read the post and was like Okay this don't sound good LOL, And i finally have brakes that would stop a freight train Hahahah, it took awhile but worth it, i just gotta figure out how to adjust the Ebrake without it causing interference with the hardware in there.
Glad to see your almost there with it, I spied another truck just like the rolling chassis i got from you today, oh yeah! looks like it has been sitting for a bit so not sure what might be wrong or even if its buyable but can't hurt to ask, only thing is this one might be a 4wd as i couldn't see the front they had 2 more trucks sitting there.

was seeing if you were able to get that PS issue under control. I still can't figure out why it would be doing that, unless there is a o-ring or gasket letting go. Keep us updated as you can, im curious
