Have a little puddle under the steering gear box each morning . It appears to be coming from the input shaft seal. Now I know why there was a bottle of Lucas PS fluid in the toolbox when I bought the truck (not a week ago)! :) Anything I should know about replacing the seal?

NAPA Lifetime warranty

NAPA has them for around $150 lifetime warranty. Mine leaked all the time even after changing the seals.

The seal is a symptom of worn bushing in the pump. Just replace the pump, IMHO its not worth pulling the thing apart to get the seal and find out the bushings are shot.

I just replaced my gear box witha NAPA unit $189. 00,

i also had to replace the pressure and return lines, $29. 00 and $49. oo from the dealer, the flare nuts where stuck to the steel line and would not turn and ended up twisting the line, works grat and steers like a new truck .

Glad I asked before wasting time and money on the seal. I'll check with NAPA. Hopefully my lines are OK. I'll start spraying them with penetrant:D .

By the way, I notice a lot of folks on this board have Borgeson steering shafts. What is the reason, something wrong with the factory shaft I guess?

Thanks again. :)

I'm glad this came up. I've had oil around the pump area for a month or so, couldn't figure where it was coming from. Front engine seal area is dry but there is oil on the front of the pan and around the pump. Guess I'll need to look closely at the pump. I have noticed that the pump fluid was real dark and have been siphoning some out and putting new in to help clean it up but it seems to stay dirty. WTH, guess its new pump time.

My factory shaft had a huge amount of play in it, and in fact when I reached down by the driver's side tire and grabbed it, I could move the thing side to side. Obviously the U joint in my steering shaft was pretty worn.

The Borgeson shaft that I installed tightened up my steering wonderfully. When I ordered the shaft from Borgeson's website I also ordered a new rubber rag joint disc. In hindsight, the rubber disc wasn't necessary though.

By the time I got the steering box out (for the third time), it isn't worth putting the old one back in. The shaft is a great investment. I replaced the joint with the one from Dodge and took it out within the year due to play.
