Shafts

So Are all of you Borgeson shaft guys still happy? Uhh How do I say this correctly but how are your shafts holding up? #ad
I am about to revamp the rig's front end as this thing is allmost back to new. (Yep Allmost a perfectly restored 2001 :-laf ) And the front end is all that is left (Quad 4x4 Ball Joints , And a living roon filled with links , joints and stabilizers and whatnot)

I have read some interesting on the fence reports on the borgeson units on their installs. I am looking not only for that info but how are the shafts and joints holding up? I mean 300 + bucks for an intermediate not that high but it all is in the name of strength. And as a bonus they are here in ct :D

I'm certainly not on the fence about the installation - mine was hell warmed over. There's not much room to get hands and arms to the upper connection.

And I don't have enough miles on the shaft to speak of the longevity. But I can't believe it's a lesser piece than the stock unit. It weighs about twice what the OEM shaft does. I think it'll last longer. And I think Borgeson's reputation is worth some hefty quality control efforts.

Tool Man, my $. 02 worth - go for it. It beats the stock shaft for precision, and it made a big difference in my steering.

Hope this helps,

John

Mine has about 150,000 miles on it, still nice and tight.

It's the best peice on the front end. Much better unit than the stock one, my OE unit was replaced at 39,000 miles, second mopar unit went no further.

Yes it's pricey, but I'm glad I spent the extra.

good luck

I have one in my 86, don`t know how many miles are on it but it looks to have been there a looong time, it`s so nice I`m going to swap it into my 93 CTD.

IIRC, Flaming River also makes a very nice piece, and may be a hair less expensive.

FR stuff is also quite beefy.

Can't speak for the borgeson unit per se... but on my play toy, I made my own. I used spicer u-joints which are regreasable and rebuildable, and I used borgeson's bare double d shaft. I also modified it so it collpases easier to help ease some road vibrations I was having in the steering wheel Mine is stronger then their complete shaft, and it only cost about $125 to do.

The only thing I can see, is the larger ujoints may give clearance isues. it wasn't in my old RC tho.

Installed one in my 83 Ramcharger. the OE shaft wore out around 60K. The truck has 220k on the clock. I used it as a daily driver and off road. Hope to be pushing some snow with it this winter. When the shaft on my 02 wears out I will not hesitate to purchase one. Well made piece.

Take a look at these posts by member shendren, he didn't have much good to say about Borgeson.

There's another post about the fact that they weren't painted and they voided a member's warrantee because he painted his. I think that's worth a search.

I added a plated Flaming River steering shaft to my '98. 5 Ram but...

what was deficient on my OE steering shaft wasn't the joints at both ends... it was the shaft itself! It was nice and tight at full compression or full extension but loose as a goose right where it "lived"... not good!

If I ever get my Ram back on the road I'll let ya know how I like it! :D
