After taking in some serious thought I was thinking of going Double Din in the ram. The vent panels could come out in favor for this project. The ductwork may need a lil' trimming but is feasable. I am worried about the dash coverlay. if that center section is cut out and formed will it leave an ugly gap whereas I would need to do some glasswork and retool the panel. I was wondering if anyone has tried a double d install. My WRX's head unit I had imported from Japan from a place called oddly enough the Melting-pot.

That head unit resides in my buddys's STi and went seamlessly with the imprezza'a interior.

That head unit was a JDM Sony (BTW Japan has it all over us in the audio department) That was a CD AND MD player so I could load up with 60 songs and just have a lil' md and cd loaded to do so. Melting-pot

What I want is Kenwood's big nasty which is the DPX-930WMP. Shown below.

I have an Alpine CDA 7998; it is DIN, but the face comes out of the dash, and becomes DIN 1. 3, basically taking up the empty space around the hole. If you have to do any type of modifications, which sounds necessary for this installation, I would abandon ship, and just get something that fits. I have had every major brand of stereo, as I buy a new one every year, and from personal experience, Sony is good, but Alpine makes the best quality sound, hands down! Also, I would be weary, look at the fine details: ***1. 8v Pre Outs. . They should be at least 4 volts. *** Not trying to knock the stereo you like, but want to help you to make the right decision, so you dont end up unhappy with your choice. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, and I will help you as much as possible. good luck with your decision!

I also was amazed that a new unit would have such crappy 1. 8v preouts. Is that really the case? You definitely want at least 4v. I've also had just about every brand car stereo and agree, Alpine is the way to go. Clarion sometimes makes a nice deck and so does eclipse. I've had way too many sony pos' break on me or start skipping incessantly. Pioneers and Kenwoods I've had have had a lot of gimmicky cute features like dolphins swimming on the screen and cool graphics but sound like poop. Go alpine or go home! :)

Currently I am running an alpine CDAD855 :p with Boston accustic pro series 6. 75's and boston pro 6. 5's for rear fill. Fozgate handles the powerup and a single JL sw12 @ 1 ohm hits em hard low. In talking with one of the guys here at work he agrees that that is a typo and 4. 8 should be there as this is the next step to 5. 0 volt rms that will become mainstreem soon enough. He is going to look at the KW Japan site and double check for me. I at this point am either going to go trick and have my MD capability or go with a true Hard drive system and take ALL my tunes with me so I have em at all times.

Mmmmm... double DIN head units.

I've often looked at the double DIN stuff and wished I could cram one into one of my trucks... never got much beyond the wishing stage, though.

I saw TMTT's old double DIN Sony installed in the previously aforementioned WRX STi - it's REALLY cool and totally complemented the Defi gauges and the whole rest of the interior.

I remember not too long ago when I asked the very same question Toolman you told me I was crazy,LOL. I have even a better idea for the radio, move it into the usless cubby hole below the factory radio in front of our sticks and then use the factory radio hole for the next round of gauges. It would be alot easier to fabricate a mount and the trimmings for the cubby and replace it later if you decide to sell the truck... ... ... ... ... . Andy

Andy, that sounds like a great idea for the cubby hole. But where am I going to put my bagels if the cubby hole is no longer there? It seems as if bagels (bagged and wrapped, of course... ) and sunglasses are the only things that end up in that spot... :-laf

Well ... you are :p And yes I did say that but after having that dash apart recently I got to churning brain butter again and well ... ... I'm Crazy for thinking it but there IS that "What if I... ... ... "

Well ... you are

Thanks alot, your beginning to sound like Sled Puller now,he tells me that all the time,LOL.

I still have that complete double din unit with all the amps, subs, speakers and 10 disc changer to accompany it. I guess we ought to have a BBQ/Dremel tool workout and see what we can conjure up to make it all fit.

Matt. .

Since seeing you at Muncie if I have to tell you where those bagels go instead of the cubby hole, then no explanation will be given. Well now wait a minute,I guess I better, they go to me and watch how fast they dissappear. BTW,I didn't know sunglasses were supposed to go there,I thought they belonged on the drivers seat. This way when you get out and then get back in you can sit on them and smash and bend them into submission. Oh crap,I bet I am the only one who does that,LOL..... Andy

Andy,

After going to Muncie and seeing the local gals do things like this... I think I ought to feed them a bagel or two - they look hungry.
