I've got the PTO cover off installing a Fuller Oil Filter. I've got to get this right the first time or I'll have to drain all my new RP oil. So, which way does the word "Top" go on the oil catch plate (closest to the transmission) on our models (01 NV4500) ? Also, which gasket goes where? The corkboard (brown) and the other (dark). One goes between the two filter housings, the other between the housing and the PTO/transmission opening.

Thanks

Ok. Went ahead and put the catch plate facing UP. And, then used both the gaskets with some RTV between them and the housing plates. No leaks this morning. Hope it's right.

It sounds like you have it. For future reference the install goes as follows.

Transmission, paper gasket, plate with the lip facing up,cork gasket and then the cover.

? Fuller Oil Filter?

How about some more information on this oil filter setup? ( I have an '03 4x4, maybe it will work on mine?) -Eric

I've had one of these on my trans for 3-4 years. Do y'all think they really do much good? Last time I changed the filter it was pretty dirty if that means anything. Then 2000 mi after I changed it my 5th gear blew off - but hey, it was clean when it came off. Reminds me of my mom telling us to always wear clean shorts because you never know if you might wind up in the ER. :-laf Yours too?

Thanks Parks. That's exactly how I did the install (good guess). But, I'd read where some ditch the gaskets and use RTV only. I used both. Not sure which to use on the next change. Any experience with that?

Also, that little filter doesn't really sit very tight in the housing (I just sandwiched the housing together with the filter in place). Anyone have any problems with that thing coming loose and floating around?

Walker - I know what you mean about the filter seeming loose but last time I changed mine the old one was right where I put it. Hadn't budged. Have never used any RTV on these - just the gaskets - never any leaks so far.

You really do not need to use RTV silicone. It should be fine without it. I also forgot to tell you that the filter must be installed on the passenger side of the transmission.

Got that part right too.

BTW I already feel a big difference in the 3rd and 5th shifts (which were getting a little rough), with the RP 75w-90. Pleased so far.

Thanks again.
