I'm going from memory here and correct me if I'm wrong, but the standard 6 speed (NV4500) doesn't have the PTO. I think you have to order a NV4700 to get the PTO... . I think anyway. I haven't seen anybody on here with one.
Yep, the NV5600 has provisions for a PTO on either side. I'd like to see some kind of air compressor setup. Also, I've heard rumors of a hydraulic powered winch but never seen one in person.
Well, obviously I didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about on the PTO as it relates to a NV5600. However, I do know what a PTO is, and if this board ever gets a tractor thread going I might actually prove quite helpful. (red face here)
I remember folks last year talking about problems idling, but I would like to see an air compressor option as well, if the idle thing isn't a problem. Right now I carry an electric portable, and it takes longer than I would like.
I had planned to build somthing utilizing the PTO to compress air but I haven't gotten to it. I did send Muncie power an email about is a couple months ago and never heard back. Perhaps I'll try again. If I had a reliable PTO unit to bolt on the transmission that I could get a drive shaft out the rest I can do. Old air compressors are not that difficult to find. Thanks for the reminder Matt, I need to write another email.
I used to have an old 72' Dodge 2 1/2 ton service body work truck. Bought it at an auction from the Gas Company. It only had a 318 motor, but had a lot of guts. It had a PTO driven air compressor, very useful. Ran air tools and jack hammers off it...
I know it is possible. Tire repair and service trucks have them but were talking about big $$$. I was hopeing to get the PTO unit for a cuople hundred and build the rest to make a unit with way more power and longevity than an electric compressor for not much more money.
Looks like a decent electric pump is the answer...
I'm really disappointed that there isn't a nice compact air compressor that is all self contained... so that it could be bolted right up to the transmission/x-fer case... that way you wouldn't need driveshafts and all that jazz.
Just when I thought a PTO pump would keep things simple... .
I heard back from Muncie and they said what I wanted was on their website. Gee, I wrote because I couldn't find it on the website. They did give the name of their local dealer so I'll give them a call and see what I can find out.
I was able to locate a PTO unit that would work well for the application and there are actually many options available as far as right/left side, high/low shaft and cable/electric/air shift. The bad news is after doing a little measuring under my truck it isn't going to fit too well.
There's plenty of room for the PTO on either side but I'm limited to the passenger side to make the drive shaft clear the transfer case and there is not enough room on the passenger side to mount the compressor because the exhaust is in the way. Basically I could put the PTO on the passenger side and make some kind of bearing block/pulley assembly to drive the compressor mounted on the driver side but it'll be way more complicated than what I was looking for.
For those of you that have 2wd trucks and would like to try this you shouldn't have too much trouble because you won't have clearance issues with the transfer case. If you're interested get in touch with me and I'll give you all the info I already have.
Now I wonder if I could mount a PTO hydraulic pump and drive my air compressor and winch with it... .
