Verify that your intake heater is working.

The intake heater serves 2 purposes. 1 is to assist in very cold starting. 2 is to help idle quality and reduce white smoke after cold starting due to the post heat cycle.

My truck is very clean on cold start, but will let out a puff of grey smoke on hot starts.

I do mix 2 cycle oil with fuel

a oz per gal as well as a dose of MMO

every now and then

the truck was putting out a puff of black smoke at start up cold

but now it's a gray or whitesh puff of smoke

does this sound like a head gasket

going#@$%!

:eek:i'm in south Florida so it just gets cool here 50s 60s please god don't let it be coolent in the engine

Does the smoke continue after start? Does it smoke on warm starts? How many miles are on it? What year is it? Oh, a 99, I see it now. I understand the this is also a sign of an ageing VP44 pump or weak lift pump.

lift pump does 20 at idle

and 18 on the open road

it only has a puff of smoke at start up

Mine started doing this not to long ago (About 120K) didn't think much about it and then read about the lift pump and VP44 issues that can cause it. Installed the Air Dog and it is still there but less of it. Have you looked to see if you have been using up coolant? If there was a leak it should start to go down.

Had the same thing a few years ago. Then the VP finally went. After a new one was put in no more white smoke the next winter.

Mine just started doing this. Ive had the truck for 3 weeks, just started noticing it a day or so ago. Never did it when 1st got it.

Only thing i have done to it since then is running 2stroke mixed with the fuel and its been colder here in FL (60-70*)

Start up, puff some white. give it a little pedal and some black like normal and some slight white.

Only happens when its been sitting all day or over night. Shut it off, come back an hour later and wont do it.

I hope its not the vp44, the thing was replaced it before... truck only has 105K miles on it

Well this morn i watched it when it started up and no white smoke. It was 46* out when i went to work. Im guessing the smoke before on start up was due to not being cold enough for the grid heaters to turn on.
