Archived Puffing balck smoke

I was towing a skid steer today and I noticed when I stepped on the pedal the truck puffed black smoke, even worse from a stand still. Also I noticed when I let my foot of the pedal the truck I know it sounds wierd but it made a groaning noise for a few seconds as the rpms dropped. The sound is almost like a bad power steering pump but it definitely isn't. The truck has 69500 miles on it and no mods. Could it be the fuel pump I unfortunately have not had time to get my guages in is there any way to check or wait tos ee if it dies. thanks in advance for any help

Check the air filter and make sure it is clean and also check the intercooler hoses to make sure they are all tight and not leaking.
