I'm looking for an old junk 14'x40' mobile home for conversion to a movable hunting cabin. I plan on building a new living space on the old frame - probably narrowed to 12'. Anybody have any ideas as to how heavy a mobile home like this might weigh originally before I do my thing? I'm just looking for a very rough estimate.

Please go easy on the admonishments as I am aware of the legal requirements in my state as well as the physical limitations of my hitch, suspension and brakes.

Thanks guys!

I'd guess maybe 40,000 lbs. but I don't really know for sure. But I wouldn't think they'd be much lighter than that.

Another option you might look at is there are a few places around that make the frames for the mobile home companies. Don't know much about them either but I know their around.

I've been thinking about draggin one myself and if it is still there in a week I will be. It is an old trailer 8-8. 5x40. It is sitting on the lot next door that I bought last fall and was supposed to be out in Sept, Dec,March. I can not see this one being over 15k with the peak roof so the mighty Cummins should laugh at it.

I tried to move a 60' construction trailer once on the job. No furnishings and it set my truck down in the dirt. Make sure of the weight balance and tongue weight.

Also these trailers don't travel well. ---but where their is a will there is a way. Sounds like the kind of project I would undertake.

Good luck

I towed a 40' X 10' once with a '56 Jeep station wagon. About ten miles with part of that up a short steep crooked hill. It didn't seem too heavy, but it was really awkward. I had a guy ahead of me with his flashers on. All back roads so we didn't meet any cops. Probably still be in jail if we met any of them.

Thanks guys. I've located a rotten 14x60 that is located on a job site that will allow us to strip it there and leave what is left of the top behind. I'll drag the bare frame home where I'll shorten and narrow it to 11x40 and then relocate the axles for proper bal/tongue weight. If it does or doesn't work out, I'll report back.
