where can i get a gear puller like diesel dan uses. i picked up a 3" with claws. i dont think this one wil get in the housing. where do you get snap on tools. i see the trucks around but dont think theres any stores.

I used a steering wheel puller when I did mine. I also need a little heat on the gear to get it to pop off.

Use the steering wheel puller. Advance Auto has a tool loaner program, we became good friends when I did my VP.

I used a steering wheel puller and like Dan said, I had to use the two shorter bolts that hold on the APPS to the engine to screw into the gear. Mine was TIGHT! It finally popped off with a bang. It was the original pump. There was no way I could have pryed on the pump enough to ever get the gear off the shaft. His video sure helped me out with the pump replacement! Good luck!

ya. must be tight. we made a 4" dia. x . 25" thick plate of steel and drilled holes and tapped center. no luck. need to find a puller fast. b

This is the tool I have and it has well over a dozen VP changes without ever not working. Perfectly designed tool. Call local snapon, they will help!

I made my own with a piece of angle iron and grade 8 bolts. Just tighen the two grade 8 bolts and tap it with a hammer. The angle iron does not flex link flat bar. You my have to chace the treads with a tap if you damaged them. When you pick up the grade 8 bolts, get a hand full of washers to get the lenght correct.

Leave the pump mounted until you pop the gear. I did not remove the three injector lines next to the block. Just push them back out of the way towards the block.

You don't need a "center bolt" to press against the shaft itself - the outer bolts that thread into the pump gear are what exerts force on the shaft as they are drawn up tightly...
