High winds in Wyoming

19.5 Tire discussion

I've crossed the Santiam pass while it was snowing a couple times. Both times I was really glad that I wasn't towing anything. Considering the entire Willamette valley is snow and ice, not just the mountains, I hope they have the good sense to wait out the weather.

My 11 DRW and previous DRV in SD. All was well until I hit an overpass with a slight curve. I could see it was a solid sheet of ice so I basically let off just enough so I was not under any power. I got into it and i could feel the truck starting to drift. I held steady and slightly steered into it and finally straightened out. I could not have gotten sharpened #2 Ticonderoga past the sphincter.

I made it all the way into Chicago with no issues. Get off the interstate around the clover leaf and into the shade of the bridge. Under the bridge out of the sun the road was a sheet of smooth as glass ice. One min I’m merging the next the truck and all 65’ of boat and trailer are sliding sideways. I had to look out of the passenger window to see where I was going. To this day I don’t know how the rig straightened out an I ended up in the extreme left lane. I was puckering to say the least… less than a mile from my destination an I almost wreck a million dollar boat…

Arizona around where @NIsaacs is...

Coming around a corner in a 65 MPH zone roads clear with 4 lanes for a passing zone both ways at this point. Altitude and very very AM likely near the coldest part of the day. Clear and dry roads ... unlike the week before that we used 4X4 and made our parts deliveries to the surprise of the shop owners in near blizzard conditions.

Yeah clear and dry roads with no reason to need 4X4 ... except a old snowbank on the uphill side had left melt-water on the road. This froze over and left a nasty surprise, a black ice patch. The only wet spot on the road that day between here and Springerville, AZ. Just over the top of a grade that still had the underpowered diesel at full throttle to get back up to speed. The rear wheels broke loose on the ice and the back end stepped out even with an open diff. Oncoming car and semi behind the car.

That's when it got interesting.

Using all 4 lanes and running the wheel nearly lock to lock like 8 times managed to get things straightened out and avoid a head on with an oncoming car and semi. Impressive rubber marks all over the road from the truck and loaded 24' tag trailer.

I still am more concerned about Road Rats than ice. Like Elk, wild horses, deer, and like hazards that in a herd ... well at least you don't need to 'win' a tag or two from The State if there is anything good left on them after being run over by truck-trailer while marinated in engine oil and coolant.

20 years of hauling logs, in the winter, throwing on a set of three railers minimum and dropping off on all them beaver slides will age you before your time. I don't tow in the snow with my pickup trucks anymore. It's really rare that I even get my empty pickup truck in snow. When you are retired, you pick your days.
