Two hitches and one pinion later, and Joe was waving his hat to the crowd... .
Ole Smokey pulled first, w/ the newer hitch setup. Turbo didn't light until 1/3 track, traction was tight, but the smoke cleared and the momentum built. When 3/4 track approached, the ground and tire speed were both up, but the hitch laid down;
Ole Smokey had the sled moving well, when the hitch broke... Joe got intimately familiar w/ the brake pedal... you oughta check out the front seat; It has a few new rips in 'er now!
Next up was you guessed it, Joe Underwood... this time he was back w/ The Silver Bullet, 285/75 ATs, and using the "proven" hitch this time.
Track was again, real tight, but the smoke came on, which never cleared by the way, and the sled was movin' real good...
At 165 feet, sled still in motion, the "proven hitch", well wasn't so proven anymore as it laid down too, and the Silver Bullet raised up as the pinion shaft and the yoke were no longer a part of the rear axle assembly; This was the same hitch that's been in use for years, was used Friday night, and was used three times just prior to this pull.
First the hitch broke, the truck jumped forward, then the pinion snapped, the truck raised up a bit, and all came to a stop; One right after the other.
Joe was once again, out of the truck and waving his hat, and the crowd was eatin' it up... He just wanted to hear his name said over and over and over... ya know it's all good for advertisement and he expects to see record crowds at the shop... all there to learn the secrets needed to build that hitch-breaking kind of power.
So there we sat until about 2:00am, the Silver Bullet all alone in the pavilion, w/ only one light on overhead. Then the boys from Charlotte showed up w/ a Mack truck and a low-boy... not just a one-ton and trailer, but a full semi. Ya know, you got to have a big truck if you're gonna pull the Silver Bullet back to the stable.
In order to get the Bullet off of the trailer, we pulled the rear axles, and drove in w/ front wheel drive. That seemed to be the only way w/o creating more carnage.
Moral of the story here is... well we're just not sure yet... more to come.
