does any one sled pull with out their filter and intake tube on and if so what do you put on the charger side of the turbo to keep dust and debrie out please post pics if you got em tia
 
Having teched a few pulls over the last 3 years you would not believe the number of people that pull without a filter or intake pipe. Most who ran w/o anything were pretty much going for broke anyways. Generally if you are running without a filter dirt/foreign objects are the least of your worries. Look around at an NTPA pull, next to no one will have an air filter on their vehicle, truck or tractor. there are a few diehards but most don't.

Not running an air filter is a bad idea,IMO-especially when there is sand/dirt piles at the end of the track.

I think for what you would gain isnt worth the risk, the dirt flying around gets around and in more places than you think! Why would you take a 20, 30, 40, or even 50,000 dollar truck and pull the air filter off in an enviorment like that to get maybe 5 or 10 HP?



Although I have been accused of doing it once or twice on the street for short runs.
 
Are they thinking quick access to shut off the air at the turbo with flat piece of wood or something in the event of runaway?
 
If they are, they aren't thinking!!



How many pieces of wood have you seen laying around the track?



One less clamp to take off when the turbo explodes because a rock went through it? :-laf



Maybe there is hidden HP in the dust??? Someone go to a dyno with a bucket of sand, and start chucking it in the turbo.
 
Well unless your pulling in reverse 99. 5% of the major dust is behind you, plus most of the engine problems comes from things that a filter has nothing to do with, such as aluminum chunkies from junk chargers. If you trash a engine in the 15 sec. it takes to make it down the track from dust you've got Tsterner luck. :D sorry ted.

I think inside the engine compartment is where most of the dust and dirt would go to since the front tires are blowing it up or at least around the engine compartment which doesnt get very good flow through ventaltion at the slower speeds when hooked up to a sled. On top of that most twin and big single trucks have so much turbo sucktion if there is dirt anywhere near or around the engine compartment it will get sucked in IMHO.
 
With the exception of Dave Mitchell I don't think most of them use filters either. At least Erik Stacey didn't have one on in the truck show in New Lexington. Nor did I see a place to put one. Could be wrong, usually am.
