Injection Pump Failures

I have seen a few threads on here lately about pump failures. I was just wondering if the people experiencing these failures were using any kind of fuel additive, and the model year of their trucks.

Thanks, Dan

I had 68,113 when I had to replace my pump. The truck had 32,000 on it when I bought it. I have never used any additives in the fuel. The truck ran great up to the last fuel filter change. Then I couln't get it to fill the fuel filter.

If you need an new lift pump, I would check first to see it your dealer will warranty it, if not, go to Cummins and get the pump. $414 from Dodge, $139 from Cummins.

I believe he was asking for the information in regards to the injection pump, not the lift pump.

I have 20,800 miles on my truck, had a "Hot" PowerEdge on from about 3000 miles to 18,000 miles, took it off to get the warrenty work settled (transfer case seal fixed apparently now, hopefully!) also had to get a new track bar, and they just ordered me up a tie rod and drag link, inner ball stud on drag link is popping through. They didn't have it in stock.

Anyhow, I have used maybe 2 or 3 bottles of Stanadyne is all. Injection pump seems fine, as well as my lift pump.

If for some reason you need a new injection pump, and its not under warrenty they run about $1350, don't let the dealer sell you one.

I had my first lift pump go bad (below 8 PSI at WOT) and took it in and the dealer replaced it under warranty at 37,000 miles. But now at 48,300 miles I think the new one is getting flaky already and think it's going to take a dump as my reading are getting alittle erratic, but still does not go below 8 PSI WOT. It's either that or my sender is going bad.

Roadwarrior, this does not directly answer your question, but it does bring one up for me. In the literature for the 2001 Cummins it states "Under emergency conditions 1k+2k Kerosene, Jet A, Jet A-1, JP-5 and JP-8 may be used if %5 lube oil is added to the fuel. DO NOT run the VP44 injection pump on these alternate fuels without the lube oil. Pump damage is likely without a lube additive. " My question is; when Cummins says lube oil, do they truly mean lube oil or a fuel additive? A little closer to your question, there was a thread wher Blue Chip Diesel explained the failures. Steve St. Laurent posted it and is a lot more computer savvy than I. Maybe he will re post or give you the thread.
