Here is what we did. We swapped a 175hp pump out of a 95 cummins with a 215hp (913) pump. So basically we put a 215hp pump on a 175hp motor. I was wondering do you time the engine by CPL# or by pump?
We set the timing to 16 degrees (5. 6mm of lift) which is the correct lift for a 215hp engine. Whereas if we timed the pump to the engine CPL# we would have had to set the pump to 4. 9mm of lift to acheive 16 degrees.
We also put in some 191 delivery valves, raised the govenor to about 3000 rpm, custom grind cam plate and 370 injectors. The afc is also set pretty loose.
The problem we are having is it breaking up at low RPM and white smoke. It only happens when the engine is warm. When we first started the engine up we noticed the engine idled smoother, and not as loud (Compared to the the 175hp pump timed at 16 degrees). It acts like the timing has slipped. Which it was late last night and we haven't checked yet, hopefully today.
Any info would be great. Also what is the correct way to set your timing, by engine CPL or by pump? Also does anyone know if the 160, 175, 180, 215 hp pumps all have different timing gears, I would assume since the lift in mm is different to set pump your timing?
