OK; I understand that the pump has to be set up. Mine was setup on the bench when it was rebuilt. My question regards timing to the engine, much like distributor timing on a gas engine! I lined the pump up with the mark on the timing gear housing, but is that enough? What about performance timing? My Cummins puts out some smoke at idle. Can tining correct that?

Oh, BOY!

Here is the procedure for timing the engine:

The pump is locked in place on the bench, if you take it to a pump shop. There is a bolt that is tightened against the drive shaft to hold it where the shop set it.

The engine is then positioned (by means of the TDC pin) at 0 degrees and the pump installed in whatever position it takes to put the key in the gear's slot.

Then, you tighten the pump to the engine, loosen the drive shaft and pull the TDC pin back out.

This times the pump to the engine. The TDC pin needs to be verified accurate, and the pump itself works best timed slightly ahead - say 1. 30 to 1. 35mm travel instead of 1. 25mm.

If you did not follow that procedure, all is not lost, but you need to have the tool that checks plunger travel on the pump, so that you can verify plunger lift at TDC.

Does this help?

I followed that procedure. Now how exactly do I set the advance to 130-135? I did NOT verify that the plastic pin was accurately timing my engine; but the engine ran fine after I installed the pump. I just want it to run better. Should i go by the book on valve adjustment? Or can that be improved?

Hey jsimpson.

To check the timing you need the Cummins dial indicator with adapter or equivalent. the Cummins gage costs about $165. 00. It reads in . 01mm increments and has a range of about 5mm. You can find true TDC by using the procedure in the service manual that involves making the #1 cylinder exhaust valve hit the piston but ALL THE INJECTORS NEED TO BE REMOVED so the engine will turn easily and you know when to stop turning the engine.
