For those of you that use a (special) timing light, to set or check timing, where you get the signal from the injector line.

Do attach your injection signal to the injector line as it leaves the pump or as it enters the injector?

Would this make a difference in the timing result? Say a few degrees more advanced if reading near the pump? How does this compare to other methods of setting pump timing?

Might someone have check both for exact difference?

Seems to be a great way to check and set timing BTW!

I am short on details as I was just a spectator.

The pick up needs to be as close to the inj as possible on a straight section of the inj line or the timing gun will read more advanced than what it really is. Also the inj line needs to be sanded and cleaned to bare metal were you attach the pickup or you will have bad readings also.

That is what I thought

That is what I expect to here. Just needed to here it. The shop here in ND likes to set timing at 19. 5 - 20 degrees. But the pickup on the injector line is next to the injection pump.

Would you guess it would be as much as 2 - 3 degrees?

My truck is only slight louder then before at all at this "20 degrees" I really wonder if it is more like 17 - 18 when done next to the injector. I spoke with Al at PDR and he said 20 should be really raspy and loud.

Next time I am the shop we will check it, this time next to the injector.

Thanks for the reply though!

Maybe you weren't in earshot when I asked Scott if they ever tried timing with the pickup at the injector. He said they tried it and noticed a solid 3° difference between pump side and injector side. They stay with pump side pickup and try for around 18-19°

When I told Piers my timing was 20° he asked if was louder. I told him it was actually quieter, he was puzzled. I bet a true 20° timing measured at the injector must clatter like a John Deere "R"

I'm curious to try a plunger measurement, just for grins.
