I'm going to have the front of the motor apart for the KDP tab, so I figure I'll bump up the timing a little while it's opened up. What would be a good number for my set up (180hp pump,370's, #6 plate 4" exhaust)? From reading the posts here 15 to 16 dergrees seems to be the ticket. What would the lift in millimeters be for my pump? Thanks for any help guys.

With a stock head gasket you don't want to go more than 16 deg.

This is just a suggestion, don't slam me guys.

What is a Stock headgasket?

When we talk of a stock headgasket and possible problems with high timing are we talking about the factory orginal? or does this also include any replacement (updated "marine") gasket? Any benifit from thicker gaskets?

I recently had my headgakset replaced due to a long term seep near the Tstat. I was planning on having the timing bumped anyway. I wanted 16, the shop I was at likes to go to 20. I said I would try it for a year and see how I like it.

We did a dyno run after headgasket (had to install a . 020 as . 010 did not show..... 008 milled off) and stock timing and another with just the timing bumped to 20. Gained 30 hp.

So far I don't mind the noise (I hate loud engines BTW), I like the very crisp response all then way to 3600 rpms, I like the less smoke or atleast less black smoke. I do have more low rpm and idle smoke with a cold engine (might be the . 012 over gasket and drop in compression).

MPG seem up at least a full 1 mpg but again need more time and miles.
