another new person here with question about pump timing. . how do you go about advancing the pump timing?. i don't have a manual so everything is guess work for me... i have a set of POD's ready to go in but, i want to advance the timing too. . any help would be grately appreciated... might be dumb question but some of us are old and dumb...

Taken from the STage 1,2,3,4 sticky thread at the top of the forum. Lots of other good advice there.

>Increase Injection Pump Timing: Raising the injection timing of the VE pump to near maximum safe levels improves the overall responsiveness of the engine as well as aids in reducing some emissions, smoother idle, better general performance in conjunction with injector upgrades.

As a rule the pump timing can be increased to 15 - 17*advance or between 1. 40mm to 1. 50mm spill port lift, depending on the method used by the shop/mechanic. While it is occasionally difficult to increase a 1st Gen pump much beyond 17*advance, it is recommended that this is roughly the limit in order to maintain head gasket integrity. Something to keep in mind is that the 1st Gen engines had a number of different "stock" settings. It can range from 1. 25mm on the later trucks to as much as 1. 40mm on the earlier models. It should mention the recommended setting on the engine plate mounted on the side of the gear cover.

While not the very best method, it has been found that by locating the existing index marks on the injection pump/gear case, then rotating the VE pump upward until there is approx. 1/8" space between them, usually results in advancing pump timing to approx. 15*advance.

Professional shop worth it.

When I first got my truck I advanced the timing using the marks. No change that I could tell. Later I had a professional shop do it with the dial indicator. When they got done, the marks were at least a quarter inch apart. That did produce a noticable change in both power towing and noise. I also lost a pound and a half of boost??? I later had a different shop check it while testing the injectors and it was right on. The marks can be wrong by a substantial margin. Also, mine looks like it has two marks???

Your experience is not uncommon... the timing pin used to determine TDC can be out by a considerable margin. It takes some real careful "tongue hangin out" to get it close with the pin. .

As a result, the pump timing can actually vary quite a bit, as you discovered.

If that happens to other guys, and they can't get to a shop for a "proper" set, then carefully keep tweaking it, even just a 1/16th at a time till you notice the difference.

The engine sound will be different, harder sounding. The idle will likely smooth out and possibly rise a bit. The response when you "blip" the throttle will be noticably improved, and finally, when you shut down the engine will come to an almost instantaneous stop, rather than doing the "wet dog" shake.
