I just advanced the timing on my pump, I found that a distributor wrench works well for that hard to reach bolt on the bottom side, and I had to use a 1/2" deep well socket and a couple of long extensions to get to the backside, I found that a large cresent wrench applied to one of the squared off features on the side of the pump worked well to move the pump without loosening the injector lines (I tried to loosen them but I could only get about 3 of them loose. ) my injection pump has been replace recently and did not have the mark on the side of the flange, so I marked it with a cold chisel then rotated the pump so that the mark was 1/8" above the mark on the gear case. It really smoothed out the idle and cold starts. I made some adjustments to the full fuel screw, the AFC cone position, star wheel adjustment and smoke screw. I also played around with the idle, at first I turned it way down, I don't have a tach yet so I can't say what RPM it was at but when I put it into gear the idle dropped and I thought the truck would fall apart it was shaking so bad, so I turned up the idle until the truck smoothed out when in gear. there is a pretty good set of instructions on Geno's garage website, and in the First Gen section of Issue 42 although I found conflicting info about the AFC starwheel adjustment, so if anyone is sure which direction would you turn the star wheel to get more fuel with less boost? I turned mine 1/4 turn clockwise.
