I have a friend that wants to buy truck outside California and then bring it into Calif. He wants the HO W/automatic that isn't available in Calif.

Has any one in Ca. bought outside and brought in?

Thanks

Before I bought my '02 I checked into buying in Idaho. You can purchase out of state but to bring it into Calif. as a new vehicle it must be equipped with Calif. emissions. After it has 6000 miles it can be brought into state as a used vehicle whether its Calif. equipped or not. This is how it was explained to me, maybe someone else has a different explanation or more knowledge about this.

another way is to dual register it... both states and the "other" as a primary

BTDT. . my 98. 5 rig was registered in Nevada and 3 months later in Calif. as a dual registration. . then droped the Nevada at registration timel

California Reg..

Be careful. I know a few people how work at DMV and they tell me bringing in a newly purchased vehicle without CARB labels into the People Republic of Califonia will send up RED flags. They look at all your records. I will be purchasing a new 2500 shortly and this will probably be the last one I regsiter in California. Hope you can beat the system and the State. Defeat Gov. Grey Davis in the fall. , Gary

Tell your friend I would be happy to drive it for 7500 miles so he can bring it into communist California.

Could you give more details? Such as,

1. Do you own, rent, or lease property in Nevada that you could use as a residence address? Unfortunately, I don't, but am interested in a way to purchase a new HO DC with 6-speed.

2. What about insurance for the period it was registered in Nevada? Any problems in that regard?

3. When you brought into Calif after 3 months, did the vehicle have at least 7,500 miles on the odometer?

Thanks for any info. I'm just trying to figure how to purchase the vehicle I want, not what Gov. Grey Davis says I can have.

A few months ago I bought my new 02 which does not have CA emissions on it. I go to school here in Nevada and bought it here in Vegas. I too thought about going to Idaho to purchase one until a dealer here actually beat the price of everyone anywhere for what I wanted. To register my truck in CA without CA emissions I would've needed to have 7500 miles on it when you go into DMV and initiate the process. Plus they'll make you get a weight certificate, have the title sent to CA DMV so they can issue a CA title to you or your lienholder, and proof that you paid sales tax of 7. 75% or you get to pay the difference. Registration here in NV, Clark County is about equivalent to CA price wise for now, but I heard that the price drop California had on registration fees lately is going back up again. Insurance here in Las Vegas is outrageous, over 3 times more then what it is for me in CA. If I were to do it again, I'd become a resident of Oregon or Montana to save a few thousand.

Get it in New Hampshire!

Hey,

buy it here in NH ... NO SALES TAX (and no income tax) in this state, just your first year registration would be about $450, or you might be able to do a half year registration (based on your birth month).

Then take the truck around the country for a month visiting the sights ... good long vacation.

Then when you have the 7500 miles on it, go register it in Kommifornia.

New Hampshire ... ... . LIVE FREE OR DIE !!!!!!!!!

when I purchased it, I registered it in my son's name and mine. . he had a home in Northern Nevada at the time... also did not tell my insurance that it was registered there. . 3 months later I went to DMV and said that I was needing a dual registration as I was using the truck here and also there by my son... [even though this was not totally true. . he did borrow it a couple times ;) ;) ]. . and there was no issue registering here insmall town USA. . when time to renew I dropoed the Nevada reg. and just paid the calif..... not a big deal to do... by law if used in each state 50% of the time it needs dual registration. . so they told me how to do it hehe

Try New Mexico

Try Farmington Dodge in New Mexico. I bought mine there with the California Sticker for $140 over invoice. Don't know if they can order you one like you want, but it is certainly worth a call. Just ask for Fleet Sales. It saved me a bunch over the cost here in California.

When you did the dual registration, what % of California license fee did you have to pay for the year. Did you have both a Nevada license plate and a California license plate or how did that work.

Thanks

I bought mine in Nevada and took it to Alaska, where I lived. Did not have to pay sales tax that way. Alaska did not have what I wanted and I would have had to order a 99.

As for buying in Nevada then go to Cailf. , I would rather buy in Oregon, no sells tax right now. Plus it is less than $40 registration for 2 yrs. Get you a PO Box in Oregon for a few bucks and all should be good.

I just want to say I am not in favior of getting around paying taxes, but if it is Cal. go for it. Right out of high school I worked there and had 48% of my check taken away for taxes. Where does the money go? Cal. has the worst roads I have ever seen. I think they spend more on roadside landscaping than repairing the roads.

Freedom to drive....

I am one to say It's very nice to live in northern Cal but it's like cancer. I am a native and very slowly the commi are taking away our freedom in this state. By the way Lgibson the central party does not spend our highway tax dollars on landscaping they spend it on welfare types. Also, if you live in Calif and plan to reg outside change your DL as well. If you get caught the fine is out ragious. Just placed an order for a 2500, 4x4, deluxe all the bells. Invoice price 38,000. 00. I will keep you posted. Got Diesel, Gary

By a new truck, tell them that you think it's a lemon because the odometer has never worked and you're going through a heck of a time with the dealer buying it back... "honest, I have approximately 9,000 miles"... :p

Buying outside of your state

I'm currently in the process of moving to central Virginia. Hopefully, I'll be in the market for my first,,,, and probably last Dodge next year.

Does anyone know if there is any substantial savings in buying out-of-state if you live in Virginia? If so,,,, what states should you buy your truck from?

Order the truck out-of-state. Then arrange to visit TDR folks in WA, BC, WI, MI, MA, NJ, MV, VA, GA, KY, OK, TX, CO. Arrange to visit vendors (ATS, DTT, Goerend, Piers, BD, Banks, SBC, BMD, ADT, etc. ). Arrange to have breakfast or lunch with GLTDR types. Arrange to visit TDR and Geno's headquarters. Schedule in time to attend events around the coutnry. Buy, rent or borrow a TT (if you don't have one) to help break in the engine during the trip.

This might take a month, and you should have almost 10K miles on it when you are done. Then return to CA, pay the difference in sales tax, register it and be happy.

Even better, get a bunch of CA residents who want to do the same thing and caravan around the country.

Just a couple of points:

1. Doesn't matter where you buy the truck if you title/register it in CA within 90 days of purchase you will be charged for the difference on the sales tax you paid vs what sales tax is in your county. Not sure how a dual registration affects this. If you bring a vehicle into CA after 90 days from purchase it is presumed that the vehicle was bought for use out of state. I've been dealing with the Board of Equalization (sales tax enforcers) on this for my 5th wheel.

2. I've been cited twice by CHP for improper registration on my various trucks. They were/are registered to both my father & I at his WA address. I have a Ca drivers license. Both times the ticket was thrown out because my dad is a legitimate WA resident. The PO box in Oregon could be a big problem since you wouldn't have a 'legitimate' residence in Oregon.

3. In dealing with the DMV about my trailer I was informed that I could have gotten CA title/registration w/o ever bringing the trailer into CA. My original intention was for the trailer to be used out of state and then bring it into CA sometime after the 90 day rule thus meeting the 'to be used outside CA' rule and not pay sales/use tax. The jist of it was to fill out the paperwork EXCEPT the VIN verification (I bought it used so I don't know if works for a new vehicle) since I couldn't get a VIN verification on the CA form in WA. I think there have been enough RV fulltimers that wanted/needed to register their RVs in CA and didn't want to pay sales tax that this 'work-around' was developed.

Hope this helps,

Brian
