Hey guys. Just a quick question that I am trying to find the answer for. Does anyone know the reason why cummins swapped over from a 12 valve to a 24 valve setup. I was always told that it was to quiet the motors down a little but I feel like there is much more to it than that. Figured I'd pick your brains on that one. Thanks

They are quieter but not much until you get to the 3 gens and I think that is more to do with multiple injection events than the extra valves. While I don't know for sure I would guess emissions related

Actually the 98.5 to 2002 24V wins the making noise award. SnoKing

Yep, noise went up, power went up, emissions went down right along with the reliability. Emissions was the driver for the change, and enhancements with the mandated OBD sensors and controls.

Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

Similar drive for the change from 5.9 to 6.7, but they got quieter with 6.7's.
