Pusher Fuel Pump

I see that Diesel Dynamics is now see is selling a better pusher pump for the 2003's. But has anyone ever determined if this is even needed? Their has been much talk about it but no real answers, and they seem to be the only ones making one. Just wondering, no sence in throughing money away.

So far I haven't read of a single lift pump failure on a 03. So unless I go beyond 400 H. P. someday, I'm not going to bother with one.

One of the guys up at BD this weekend has run his into zero land already. He was at 431 if I remember correctly. At any rate he definetly indicated that he was having fueling problems and had built a homemade setup to try and get by until DD starts shipping theirs. Quadzilla posted saying they had something in the works and other vendors have also stated that the 03 needs help when getting up over 400. Seems to me that there may be something to it.

After 340 HP it is recommended to install a "pusher pump". I have been told that you can create a vacuum in the fuel system without it. I will install on asap. No need to be the first with a bad injection pump... .....

Close Greg. The limit is about 400hp with the stock lift pump. Above that, you need more fuel. Our kit should be SHIPPING next week. With Stage 3's and our TTPM and turbo kit (the way we are playing around now), with the stock lift pump setup, we could easily get down to 0# fuel pressure. The truck will start to misfire when this happens.

I installed the injectors on that 431hp 03 that was up at BD last week, and KeithL is right... . injector/box/turbo combination sucks the stock fuel pressure down to ZERO!

A pusher setup fixed him all up.



While we're on the subject of the stock lift pump, I really don't feel you 03 guys are in the clear from the lift pump problems that us earlier 24v guys are having.

The 03 lift pump is half the size of the older 24v version and it still has to suck fuel from the same distance.

I really don't see those tiny pumps living very long either.

The same motor is available in different applications without the lift pump. It's only there for convenience. A bulb to prime the injection pressure pump would work just as well but we might get a tired thumb.

Do you really think so... ? I don't know cummins to add (working) parts just for conveniece.



It's attached to the fuel filter cannister as part of an assembly, easily overlooked.

I have heard this same thing before also, that is why I question if it is even needed.

If the question is does the stock setup need help with stock power then I would think time will tell. I know it needs help when you add power because I have seen it with my own eyes. The way I am looking at is my engine is stock, Im not worried about it since I know its under warranty. Not too far down the road my engine is not going to be stock and I know the stock setup will not get it done. At that time I will spend a little on a pusher and sleep good at night.

Don't worry,, you won't. WildCat Diesel Performance has allready melted down a CP3 injection pump. Continued use of 400HP+ without a pusher pump will melt down your injection pump.

I'm still not convinced. The Duramax doesn't have an electric pusher pump with it's Bosch common rail fuel injection. It has a plunger to prime the injection pressure pump. 400hp isn't an open pipe at the injectors. It's still a very small amount of fuel injected at high pressure. Even if it was an open pipe, the primed pump would flow a high amount of fuel at low working pressure and less work for the pump. Just like opening up the end of the garden hose more, the well pump runs cooler, not hotter. It's going to take alot of convincing to convince me that more lubricating, cooling fuel flowed through a pump will burn it up. But trash in the fuel will... Just my $. 02...
