Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) egt and boost stock

It turned out my injection is dead (see post about pusher pump being too strong) but the dealer says it died due to the pusher pump pushing 22 psi so guess who gets to foot the bill.

I find it real hard to believe that the pump caused the injection pump failure as we added these pumps to help a dodge design defect.

I doubt there is anything I can do to get them to foot the bill so if you guys are running pusher pumps, take them off before you go see your friendly 5 star steeler...

That's BS....

The stealer is just using it as an excuse to get you to fit the bill.

How can your VP44 be dead if the truck is running fine now? I thought it only did it to you once... .

Do you have a filter in between your fuel tank and the pusher? I have an Earls in addition to the stock fuel filter.

Hearing that BS makes me #@$%! #@$%!

Dezl-

Truck only did it once so I took it to see if they could see it dying before it bit the dust and left me stranded. They said it does need a new pump, but I don't know if the truck is running or not. If it is, then I'm going to take it to cummins to do the work, not dodge. Should save me a chunk of change that way.

AZ,

I thought when the VP44's die, they just die and leave you stranded until a new one is put in... . Maybe I am wrong.

Also, were there any codes set during the hard start episode? How did they know for sure that the VP44 was dead? Ask the diesel tech what specifically they saw that lead them to diagnose the VP44 as dying or dead. Get some hard facts from these boneheads & ask a lot of questions!

Enquiring minds want to know!!:D :D

See my thread about a dead injector pump. They do just die and leave you stranded.

I was able to get mine done under warranty and the lift pump too!!. I do not however have a pusher pump, YET!!

I do have a spare lift pump from cummins $140 that I keep in the truck with a set of tools for the change. I'm in the midst of installing the gauges. I'm using the Autometer Ultra-lite 2 1/6 mech 35psi boost and the elec. 15 psi fuel pressure.

THEY CHANGED THEIR MINDS!!!

Just got off the phone of the stealer and they talked to their warranty guys and they decided to warranty my pump (OTG!!). HOWEVER...

They said the computer threw a code #1699 "Suspect Tampering" meaning they think someone has messed with my pump (I'm the only owner only running an EZ, I don't get that) but they said that running such high PSI pressures will blow the seals out of my VP44 ( I don't know about that either). They said next time it comes in for warranty work with the pusher pump on there, then my warranty is void. This opens up a whole new can of worms on the pusher pump argument...

That just saved you about $3k for the parts!!

It sounds like we have to have 2 fuel systems. One to make the things work, and one for its trips to the dealers!

I have a novel idea....

Someone should do a poll on VP44 failures.....

With choices like:

Yes mine has & completely died & left me stranded

Yes mine has & worked intermittenly

No mine has never failed

If I knew how to do a poll I would do it myself!:D :D

Check with Steve StL.

Check with Steve StLaurent, he called Bosch directly and spoke with an engineer about fuel pressure delivered to the VP44.

If I remember correctly he was told that up to 22-24psi did no harm. So I think your dealer is FOS!!

I'm real glad to hear that they decided to cover the VP under warrantee. And keep that pusher pump on your truck! My dealer said that they thought it was a great idea!

Some dealers are just parts changers, some can think and reason.

LS-

I'd leave it on, but the dealer said they are putting notes on my file to the extent that my warranty was ok as long as the pusher is off.

I'm on my 2nd lift pump and I have 24k miles left on my warranty so I'll probably take the pusher off till my warranty eats it. Trying to figure out how to come up with $3k for a VP44 isn't the best feeling in the world.

Make a bypass

AZCummins: what I did was just cut a length of rubber fuel hose and unbolt the pump from the frame, remove it and use the length of hose to fill in the gap where the pump was. The dealer won't notice this bypass hose unless they really look.

I keep this length of hose and the tools for the removal in the truck in case I have failure when on the road.

BTW: my pusher pump [7psi Carter] flows fuel freely thru to the lift pmp even if it is not running. I tested this to reassure myself that if there was an electrical failure to the pusher pump that the factory lift pump could still draw some fuel up to be fed to the VP.

Your new lift pump and VP are going to last longer with the help of the pusher pump than without.

Just my recommendation Greg L The Noise Nazi

Dodge claimes that 12 psi is the max the pump should see. weather it would would blow seals or not if you go over the pump rating you would risk a warrenty problem. And why go so high. The only reason for the pump is to keep a positive pressure. I run 12 max on my pusher. And have already had a bad vp44 replaced. The first flag raised was my pusher but after thay checked the pressure and thay were all within spec thay replaced it.

I just had a look in my service manual-surprisingly enough I can't find a P1699 code! I think maybe your dealer is pretty creative at coming up with codes-maybe you should tell them that they set code # 13 with you-you know, the one for excessive BS? :D

If you have to buy a pump please refrain from buying it from the dealer. They can be had from vendors for $1300 new.

Those of you running pusher pumps look in to a regulator and set it for 16psi, that is what the new lift pumps will do now. Buying from a Cummins dealer or distributor will always be cheaper than Dodge.
