I am trying to get ready to add a Carter 7psi pusher pump at the tank to assist the stock lift pump. Was wondering if anybody sells a kit to plumb the pump inline. I was also wondering if the pusher fails will the stock lift pump be able to pull fuel through it. I see Summit Racing sells the 4600HP which I planned on using.

No kits using the Carter 4600 *I* am aware of - and as to fuel flow problems if the pusher dies, here's what I did:

#ad

An outboard bypass around the Carter employing a home-made flopper flow valve that is closed when normal flow is present, but opens when/if the pusher stops.

Here's a detailed blow-up of what is involved just for general info:

And the install:

This setup allows nearly the same flow even when the pusher is shut down as it did when it wasn't yet installed - been absolutely faultless for over 2 years and 27,000 miles.

Good luck.

I Don' know of a kit that amounts to much more than a few clamps some hose and a relay.

I used some brass T fittings and a ball cone check valve (CONBRACO #61-102-01 3/8 x 3/8)

as a route around the pusher pump in case it fails.

I run my Main LP and pusher pump off separate relays. The main LP is triggered by the stock LP power circuit.

The pusher LP relay is run by a switch in the cab that I haven't had a problem just leaving it on.

The switch is nice to first of all turn off the pusher if you are keyed on without starting for whatever reason. If I leave it off and start without the pusher I can see where the Main LP pressure is at via the pusher bypass route.

I think a cleanable screen type 30 - 40 micron pre filter between the tank and pusher is a good idea also.

I installed a whole new fuel system with mine with Aeroquip -6 hose and fittings. I see 20 PSI cruising 75 mph using 4600 and 4601 carters.

It's not the only way... just my way and it has worked out well for me. Good luck.

Why not put a Haisley's system on it and wire it into a Hobbs switch set at 25 psi or so, when you get one it the pump will activate to help out.

No it's not a pusher, it a dedicated stand alone tapped into the banjo bolt at he pump... ... just a thought!

Gary,

Man you were ready for that question..... :D

Jim,

you have me curious on the Haisley's system? Did a Google search didn't find much.

Haisley machine I have heard of... same company?

Gary Thanks for the help. Great looking setup. Two questions. Do you think that the check valve is needed in a bypass line and what it the number on that Fram filter, I can't quite make it out?

Gary,

Hey, I'm ready for *ANY* question!

It's the ANSWERS I have problems with... :D :D

As to the question about "need" for the bypass valve - hard to say, since I haven't tested flow thru a 4600 without the bypass - I made mine for *2* reasons - the bypass already covered, and with the 1/8 inch hole thru the valve/bolt shown, get a small bleed-off of pump pressure that was otherwise too high to suit me, and also caused enough pump head pressure to be annoyingly noisy - the bypass valve I made solved both issues nicely.

As to the Fram filter, forget that one, and focus on one that will fit the particular pump hardware you use into the 4600 - the one shown uses metric threads, and I had to retap them to fit my setup, and would not use the same # for a replacement - others are available that will match right up.

I tried like crazy to find that sucker on Summit with no luck... . I must be getting old! Still no picture however, I ordered one from NAPA earlier today sight unseen hoping because it was made for this application it might be a cleaner fit than the one I used? I guess well see. Thanks DTangstrom
