This is in response to questions concerning fuel system upgrades.

This may not be the end all solution to fuel delivery problems but it has been in testing over the last 16 months on numerous vehicles with GREAT SUCESS.

Here is what we are doing and recommending for under 400 hp.

7 psi 100 gal. hr. pusher pump mounted in front of the fuel tank on the frame rail, cut in to the stock 3/8 line.

15 psi 100 gal. hr. pump mounted in the stock location.

We supply the pumps with all the fittings, hose, clamps, relays, fuse holders, terminals and wire to complete the install.

AN fittings and line to go from the lift pump to filter and filter to injection pump.

Auto Meter electric fuel pressure gauge mounted on pillar.

We use the original lift pump wires to switch the relays on and off, the relays will turn the pumps on and off.

Over 400 hp we recommend changing out the fuel lines and pickup in the tank to 1/2"

The idea behind this set up is to gradually step up the pressure so the work is DIVIDED among the pumps.

You have gravity feeding the 7 psi pump, the 7 psi pump feeds the 15 psi pump so it's only job is to feed the injection pump and not pull from the tank.

This system will maintain 15psi under any situation and has been tested up to 485 hp.

Thanks Ted for some good info, one question. If we install a pusher pump why do we still need the lift pump, won't the pusher be sufficent by itself? Thanks.

Several reasons!

Most trucks are still under warrantee and removing the lift pump could cause issues at the dealer.

We have seen too many failures with single pump systems.

I like to step up the pressure a little at a time.

Most Lift pumps are still good, and adding a pusher pump is good insurance!

Ted;

Do you have the pusher pump and fittings in a "kit" form for those of us who live a looooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg way from the east coast?

Vaughn (Oregon coast)

You mount the pump in front of the tank and cut about 8-10 inches of the stock line and run the pump in series.

We do not touch the fuel tank.

Ted

Ted To Help Ya Out?? Here's a Pic to explain about where mounting would be on a 3500 QC Right near the Flat Edge of the frame you see on the left of the pump.

Just to give a visual

pumps fuel

Ted, Ok just how hard is it to put this all together, sounds like I could do this, does it come with step by step instruction or do I need some NW Bombing help?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find time to write instructions, but the 50 or so I sold no one has had a problem.

They are somewhat self explanitory.

Tech help is a phone call away as well.

he's right, it works.

I have a Carter pump that I sourced through Napa. the pump is 9PSI@70? or 80?GPH it has a lifetime warranty too. it has held up for over 23,000 miles now. the whole setup cost me $83. 00 + I had to make the bracket to mount it with. :D

Ted, what sort of PSI are people seeing with your setup at the injection pump? Is it under 20psi or so?

I am wondering about the fuel tank pickup too. Do you have a replacement for that or do you BOMB the stocker? I looked over tntway's pickup when he dropped his tank at massdiesel's for an Espar installation. The hose from the plastic piece at the bottom looks pretty small (no more than 3/8" for sure).

I never made it by to see you last month as you noticed, I got a late start out of Pennsylvania and the traffic was heavy on 84 all the way across NY & into Connecticut. It was a jam across Danbury and Waterbury, it was about 7:30 before I passed through. Maybe I'll catch up to you next time. . .

Aux Failure

Ted, or Steve...

If these in line aux fuel pumps fail or just quit, is the stock lift pump still able to keep getting diesel to the VP44?

You hit the nail on the head RJOL! That's precisely why I replaced the OE Carter lift pump with a custom system using a Mallory 4140M electric fuel pump mounted next to the fuel sender. Just wait until one of the two Carter fuel pumps goes TU and see how well the other one will push (or pull) fuel to the VP44 depending of course upon which pump dies.

Vaughn, we are seeing, 15-16 psi no matter the load or Rpm.

Years 2000 and up the pickup tube has been enlarged compared to previous years, so I don't think it is a problem.

You should see the 94-99 pickup tube, it has a less than 5/16 hole in the bottom.

RJOL, As of yet we have had no failures with this system, 16 months.

Like anything else, if it breaks you fix it.

Worse case you have to carry a 1ft piece of fuel line to bypass one pump in the event of a failure, and you still have a backup.

I don't believe you can pull through a Mallory pump either.

If the Mallory Dies you fix it as well.
