Just got back from the Cariboo up her in B. C. and I noticed alot of blue smoke on start up. This truck just turned over 20,000 miles on the way home. It sat for over a year before I got it. Could it be that my valve stem seals have dried out or it is just from a lack of use in the last ten years. By the way what do you guys recommend for oil. Both weight and brand. Hope its not to serious. This is a sweet truck.

Does your truck use any oil? The reason I ask is my truck always gives a cloud of black smoke at startup and it is diesel soot, not oil smoke.

You will get lots of answers on the oil question. I run 15-40 Royal Purple synthetic. I change the filters about 2500 miles and the oil at around 12 - 15K. have been considering Lubrication Enginners products after reading some of the posts.

20000 it's just braking in. It could be a little oil getting by but I doubt it smoke on start is normal since it's starting to get cooler out. I prefer Rottela T at 135K a little late for synthetic but you might want to look in to it. It's a bit pricey! I use nearly no oil in 6000 mile change with the Shell Rottela T and it's cheaper. Just check all your options before you decide.

Thanks guys. As far as using oil goes the answer is no not a noticable amount. The truck was parked on quite an angle both times. The owners manual recommends 30 weight for this truck or is that just old news. How involved is changing out the valve stem seals on a 91.

Oil in a diesel usually burns white, not blue. The blue could be due to poor fuel, or the timing needs adjustment. Also the KSB valve may be sticking or have a loose wire.

Oil in the summer: Esso XD3 15W-40
Winter : Esso XD3 0W-40 Semi Synthetic.
