well yesterday was fun. When i got home i decided to fix a little exhaust leak i had with my new stacks (was my fault from original install) and i decided to drill holes in my scotty ram air 3 so i didnt have to worry about the coupler moving :). Then after dinner i just felt like wrenching so i decided to take off my bumper, spare tire, and my factory tow hitch assembly. Took a few hours and i had to leg press my bed up and my dad pulled the tow assembly out for me. So now i have no bumper on the truck. I got a Sir michaels rollpan bumper im going to mount on today then take it to get painted whenever i have time. So this morning i came into work and weighed everything

spare tire = 90 lbs

Factory tow assembly = 50 lbs

rear bumper = 25 lbs

spare tire winch thingy :p = 5 lbs

question for you all... Have you ever seen a diesel truck without a tow hitch:--) ... . Im gonna get a 5th wheel in the bed for when i do tow :D

Wonder if ill feel the 170 lbs lost off the truck... i figure since i lost 170 lbs right over the rear wheels i will be doing burnouts easier :-{} :D :--)

FWI, Everything i took off is for sale... you want it pm me

Nick

I saw in another post you are going down to 285 tires as well, what are you going to be doing with the truck? Setting it up for drag racing?

im going down to 285's because with my fender flares on the 315's rub now  I really dont want to lift this thing anymore. My old truck was lifted pretty big and i dont want the same issues i used to have...

Lets see here... .

One gallon of diesel weighs 7. 1 LBS.

36@7. 1 = 255. 6 LBS.

If you want to run light run your truck empty.

What if you get stuck or need to tow a boat??? Convert the small fishing boat to a 5th wheel???

lol i love how you guys just slam me. .

1) i didnt even buy this truck to tow... but if i did it would be either some motorcycles which weigh 1400 lbs each x 2. . OR- my uncles corvette, or a 88 scottsdale offroad truck. . so at max id be pulling 5800 lbs. . i could get the sir michaels hidden hitch

2) when i took off the 170 lbs i dont care what anyone says but i could feel it. . Today the seats and fold flat are coming out... maybe thats another 100 lbs... I'm actually thinking about tubbing this thing out :)

people feel a difference when they install tornado airs and swear that the aeroturbine makes their truck run better than any other muffler out there.

it's your truck, do what you want, but you're a goober, and we're gonna give you a hard time about it! :D :p

You most likely won;t FEEL much difference with only a couple hundred pounds gone... I know I don;t FEEL a difference with an extra couple hundred (or even a thousand) in the truck.

BUT... for drag racing you're supposed to be a tenth quicker for every 100 lbs lighter (and vice versa). Granted aerodynamics and HP/TQ are HUGE aspects of this... but even so you should see at least a little difference through the lights. So theoretically speaking if you could lose 1,000 lbs. . you should be running a full second quicker with the same HP you have now. Seems cheaper to lose weight than adding HP/TQ.

The way I see it I've added about 700 lbs between my gooseneck hitch, running boards, and toolbox. My unit tips the scales at 8k even with 1/2 tank of fuel but it still pulls like a Kenworth. I didn't notice the added weight at all.

obviously acceleration is all about power/weight ratio... the less weight you've got, the quicker it's gonna accelerate.

but I contend that the rules of thumb are slightly skewed when it comes to these trucks... they make so much torque!!!!

I just can't imagine running without a spare... I mean, yeah, back when I used to street race, I'd cruise without a spare, but my truck is my daily driver and I put a lot of miles on it. I'm about to leave for a ~2,000 mile trip in a couple days.

I've been a weight freak in the past... I got my fairmont station wagon down to ~2700lbs. (went 11. 95 NA on a MILD 302 combo) I'm well versed in the ways of gutting cars...

wish I had the money to tear up a brand new truck! LOL!

I would personally like the extra weight over the rear tires, hey you could take the hood off!!!!!, sorry for the A**ed-9 comment but I have a friend that stripped everything that wasnt needed for driving off of his truck and the thing wouldnt stay in a straight line when the turbo spooled!!!!!

In this thread people are slamming you, in another thread people are slamming you, and in another thread people are slamming you... . Do you see the common denominator here? It's YOU! You're too young to have heard it probably but there is a kids song that should be your theme song, "Why's everybody always picking on me?" :D

I don;t know of any weighing that much... ATV maybe but shoot... a new honda goldwing is under 900... even a BOSS HOSS is lighter than 1400# I think.

My '04 1700 with me on it is just at 1,000.

Nick Kudos to you for the weight savings.

As a designer in the auto industry, I know very well how much the big 3 work to reduce mass, to improve the efficiency of these vehicles. You would NEVER get slammed for trying to reduce even 1 pound from these 7000 pound trucks inside the automotive world. On the CONTRARY!!! Granted, they wouldn't do it with a spare tire and a bumper!!! LOL!!

Let me say this. If one VENDOR/Supplier can provide an equal part as another, that is at all less in mass, even in items like CARPETING, they can and WILL Steal the business from the other... . that's how serious weight reduction is in the auto world... 1 pound of mass is looked at as CRITICAL!!!!

If an engineer came up with a way to remove 170 pounds from any vehicle, they would get the promotion of a lifetime.

I can't even express how thorough, and diligent we are at keeping mass down in the design process... in every single tiny part... . it's almost nutty.
