Wheel Balancing -- 5ver & TTs

Gooseneck vs. 5th wheel

Received the Putnam class 5 receiver hitch yesterday. Very good workmanship, no drilling or "reaming" and cost is just over $200. to my door. Clamped it to a floor jack and put it in in 1/2 hour. Tucks up very neat.

Now that I can pull the trailer... all I have to do is find one!

Did you replace a factory receiver with the Putnam?

If so, how does the location (up-down geometry) of the receiver compare to the factory receiver. Any problems switching the electrical?

Thanks - Thomas

hitch fit

Thomas, Mines a '95 on a 2001 frame due to cracks in the spring towers. The hitch on the "old" frame was not factory. The Putnam hitch sits close to the bottom of the stock bumper and looks better than the factory ones that I have seen.

Thanks—I would be replacing the factory receiver on a 2000 Ram. I just wondered what ball-height differences (if any) there would be with the Putnam class 5 vs. the factory receiver.

Mike,

Not to be the bearer of bad news but I just got a class 5 Putnam for 130 with shipping. I agree it is a well made item. I decided to replace my original equipment hitch rather than deal with the rust and the pin hole was enlarging.

Qrtrhrs, Whats the part # on yours? I was ready to go for one that was just over $130 but went for this one. I can take bad news, however this price is a researched one and factory direct.

The part number is 25132 10k WC/ 14k WD. I am looking at the latest catalog from the company I bought it from and see the number has changed to 25134 @140. You have me wondering now.

I have a 25126 on my 96 that I got at a shop here in town for $160 out the door. AWdirect had the same hitch for $140 + s/h.

To adress the issue of height, I'd say it's about 1/2" higher than stock.

EDIT: One other thing I like to add, the less visible Putnam hitch make the rear diff muchmore visible for those of you with Mag-Hytec diff covers

My favorite hitch dealer's latest catalog dated June 01 has the number 25134. The #25132 is on the invoice and the paper that came with the hitch. The hitch does not say "XBR" on it. I did notice on one site a listing for "XBR"25132? Out of curiousity, I may make some calls on this. My dealer by the way is Weaver Distribuiting 1-800-932-8373. I had looked into the Putnam quite some time ago but did not order at the time. Being off this week, I decided to redo my plug, got to looking at the rusty hitch and on the spur of the moment, ordered a new one with out doing new research.

Qrtrhrs, I think you are reffering to the "25132 XDR" , (xtra duty rating), the 25132 and the 25132XDR are 2 different hitches. You are correct, the 25132 is a lot cheaper than the XDR series, both are class Vs however the XDR is built different. I opted for the better of the two... its just a buck. I was surprised that grade 5 bolts are used in mounting why not 8? Also the bolts are completely threaded thus giving a fracture "zone", I changed them out for grade 8 bolts that are not threaded to the head. Overkill, but its worth the peace of mind.
